San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres MLB Betting

A battle between contenders in the NL West takes place on Saturday when the San Francisco Giants visit the San Diego Padres in the third of a four-game set. The clubs are trying to track down the Dodgers for the top spot in the division but both have lost ground recently with spurts of poor play. A welcome sight for the Giants is seeing Yu Darvish on the bump. When the clubs met earlier this season in San Fran, Darvish had the worst outing of his career surrendering nine earned runs in 1.2 innings in a game the Giants won 13-2. The Padres have had the better of the season series so far, though, winning four of the first six meetings.

First pitch for this NL West matchup between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres is set for 7:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 9, 2022. The game will air live on FOX from Petco Park. BookMaker.eu will have betting options for every game of the MLB season.

Odds Analysis

Every now and then things go right for a club producing a magical season like the Giants had in 2021. They got career years from just about everybody and the result was a 107-win campaign and division title. The beauty of baseball is that things change from season to season. And boy, have things changed for the Giants. Their leader Buster Posey retired and pitching hasn’t been nearly what it was a season ago. Entering the series the staff ERA of 4.10 ranked 20th in MLB and their season-high losing streak reached six games with Tuesday’s loss to Arizona.

Pundits didn’t expect the Giants to win 107 games and they won’t unless they win 67 of their remaining 83. But you don’t get there by accident so going 40-39 in the first 79 games is underachieving. And the Giants have underachieved at the betting window as a result. Overall they are nearly $700 in the red and just a .500 team on the road. They’ve also been hurt by poor defense with the second-worst defensive efficiency percentage in the majors.

The Padres were expected to endure some problems on offense without Fernando Tatis Jr. And when the starting pitching started to slump the issue was magnified. Fatigue could have been a factor with the club enjoying an off day ahead of the series after playing 26 games in 26 days. They were just swept by Seattle in a two-game set scoring two runs in each game. It was the eighth time in 12 games they scored two or fewer runs leaving them at 3-9 in those games.

Despite their recent slide the Padres have been one of the most profitable teams in MLB up over $500 on the moneyline. However, all that work has taken place on the road. At Petco Park they are just 21-18 putting them $248 in the red. The Pads swept the most recent series outscoring the Giants 20-9 in three games while winning four of the first six.

Probable Pitchers

The Giants are expected to start Carlos Rodon (7-5, 2.87 ERA). The lefty has been worth everything the team is paying him emerging as the ace of a strong staff. He’s allowed more than three runs in a game just twice in 16 starts one of those in his last outing when he gave up four runs on five hits in five innings in a loss to the D-Backs. His numbers across the board are phenomenal bolstered by a strong month of May when he went 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. Rodon is third among NL hurlers with 112 strikeouts averaging 11.1 K/9. And he’s been able to avoid crooked numbers by keeping the ball in the park. He’s allowed just four homers all year and hasn’t conceded one in his last five starts covering 32 innings.

If anything Yu Darvish (7-4, 3.53 ERA) is looking for redemption. The worst outing of his career came in San Francisco in April when he allowed eight hits and nine runs in 1.2 innings. Getting raked by the Giants has turned into a common theme for Darvish, though. Over his last three starts he’s yielded 17 hits, six of them homers, and 21 earned runs over 11 innings. Take out that one game against the Giants and Darvish has a tidy 2.72 ERA. Darvish has been good at Petco this year going 4-1 with a 1.75 ERA and 0.73 WHIP across 46.1 innings.

Giants at Padres MLB Odds Pick

One team is going to bust out of its slump this weekend and the signs point to that team being the Giants. They’ve tagged Darvish in recent outings and the Padres have done little offensively while struggling to stay above .500 at home. And facing a guy like Rodon isn’t going to help San Diego’s offense.
