If you play MLB parlays every week you’re going to hit a few snags. The best hitters in the game fail 70 percent of the time and the top hurlers get lit up. I guess that’s my way of justifying what happened last week when every wager on my three-teamer lost. It comes with the territory so you take it and move on, which is what’s happening. There are several divisional matchups on the MLB schedule for Saturday, May 11 with NL East leading Philadelphia visiting last place Miami. It’s a tight race but through games of May 8 the Phillies have the best record in the Majors. They had won seven straight and 11 of 12 before succumbing to Toronto on Wednesday. Two other first/worst division matchups take place with NL Central leading Milwaukee hosting St. Louis and Cleveland at the White Sox in the AL Central.

The hardest part of playing a MLB parlay is figuring out what games and teams to wager on. For the second straight week I bet against the White Sox and for the second straight week I lost. The worst road team in the Majors won just its second away game, 6-5, in St. Louis. I also had Kansas City on the moneyline in its home outing against Texas. The Royals staff got pounded for 17 hits in a 15-4 loss. I was expecting a pitcher’s duel in LA and got it from one side. Tyler Glasnow was sharp for the Dodgers, but so was their offense in an 11-2 win over the Braves. Had I made those exact same picks a day earlier I would have hit a three-team winner.
I’m backing Toronto in its home tilt with Minnesota this week. The Jays got a spark they needed emerging from a closed-door team meeting to beat Philadelphia 5-3 on Wednesday. Toronto has the talent to contend in the AL East and if things don’t turn around we could see the core broken up. They don’t want that and I can see them going on a run.
Nearly 40 games into the season is enough of a sample size to determine the Phillies are a good team. A recent 7-game winning streak moved them in front of Atlanta in the NL East behind a top 5 offense and pitching staff. The Phils average more than five runs while the Marlins stumbled on a recent West Coast trip losing five of six in Oakland and LA. Miami has one of the worst staffs in baseball, which the Phils will exploit to cover the spread.
The Dodgers and Padres cashed the OVER in three of their last four meetings and expected starters James Paxton and Matt Waldron aren’t scaring many hitters. The top of LA’s order is terrifying with Shohei Ohtani leading the Majors in batting average and second in home runs. San Diego’s offense got a spark with the acquisition of former batting champ Luis Arraez putting the OVER in serious jeopardy.

Baltimore’s 2-1 win over Cincinnati last week got me a win on the moneyline but the offenses failed to deliver on the OVER ending my streak of two straight wins. Staying in the AL East I like the Yankees straight up against Tampa Bay. This version of the Rays is different from what we’ve seen in past years and it’s hard to take a team that loses four of six to the White Sox seriously. With Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton showing signs of breaking slumps the Yankees are a serious threat offensively leading me to back the OVER
