Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals MLB Betting

They’re not completely out of the NL Central race but the Milwaukee Brewers can’t afford many losses down the stretch. They closed last week 8.5-games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and this could be their last chance to close the gap. We also might get a chance to witness history Wednesday night on FS1 with Albert Pujols looking to become the fourth member of the 700 home run club. The Brewers have played the Cards close during the season but stumbled against everyone else leaving them currently out of the wild card race.

First pitch for this NL Central contest between the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals is set for 7:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. The game will air live on FS1 from Busch Stadium. BookMaker.eu will have betting options for every game of the MLB season.

Odds Analysis

Winning the division is unlikely, but the Brewers are still very much in the playoff picture. They are just a handful of games back of the third and final wild card spot. Their play over the last few months hasn’t been inspiring, though, since treading water when needing to make up ground is a losing proposition. Near the end of July the Brewers were 13 games over .500 and led the Cards by three games in the standings. They’ve gone 18-22 since falling well off the pace, but they’ve shown signs lately of waking up.

Two straight wins over Cincinnati to close the weekend gave the Brewers four wins in five games, which is a heater for them. And a little bit of confidence on the road against the division leaders isn’t a bad thing. Winning road games will certainly help Milwaukee’s chances of reaching the postseason again. They are just 36-39 in away games leaving them as one of the least profitable teams in the black over $800 on the moneyline. Taking the Crew on the runline has been a loser, too. They are a MLB worst 58-82 ATS over $2500 in the black.

The Cards’ second half surge was seemingly sparked by Pujols, who is closing in on 700 career home runs. And just like old times he’s leading the club to another playoff appearance. Pujols blasted his 18th of the season and 697th of his career on Sunday leading the Cards to a come from behind win over the Pirates.

St. Louis really turned things on near the end of July and haven’t slowed down. They ended the month winning three of four games and just continued their torrid play going 22-7 in August. The Cards lost to Washington on Thursday and the opener to Pittsburgh on Friday for their first two-game slide since July 25-26. Since then they’ve won nearly 74 percent of their games. With Pujols catching fire and Paul Goldschmidt putting an MVP-type season together, the Cards are one of the top offensive clubs averaging over 4.9 runs while ranking sixth in homers.

Probable Pitchers

There was some concern about Corbin Burnes (10-6, 2.93 ERA) after the Cy Young Award winner had an uncharacteristic stretch where he was beat up. During a four-start stretch Burnes surrendered 26 hits and four homers pitching to a 7.29 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. Those concerns were put to rest in his last outing, though. In dominant performance we’ve become accustomed to seeing from Burnes, he allowed just three hits and a run with 14 strikeouts over eight innings in a 2-1 win over the Giants. Burnes has been spectacular in three starts against the Cards allowing only one run and eight hits with 27 strikeouts completing seven innings in each outing. He’s 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA over 32 innings of his last five starts against the Cards.

It’s been a hit or miss for Adam Wainwright (10-9, 3.33 ERA) this season, fortunately for the Cards there have been more hits. In nine of his 24 starts Wano has allowed at least four earned runs, that includes his last two outings pitching to a 7.20 ERA lasting five innings in each start. He tossed a gem in his last start against the Brewers giving up three hits and a run over nine innings in a game the Cards lost in extra innings. That was a promising effort since he’d been hit in three previous starts giving up 25 hits and four home runs in 14 innings.

Brewers at Cardinals MLB Odds Pick

While the Brewers aren’t a very good road team the Cards have been money at home. The pitching matchup favors Milwaukee as long as Burnes can stick around, and his recent outings against the Cards suggest he could.
