Breeders’ Cup Classic Contenders
Sovereignty 6-5
It is hard to argue with Sovereignty as the favorite. The Bill Mott trained colt has won his previous four starts including the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. The only concern would be the possibility of a bounce, as is coming of a career best performance last time out, winning the Travers Stakes by ten lengths.
Fierceness 4-1
The Todd Pletcher trained horse finished second in this race last year behind Sierra Leone. He was beaten in the Whitney Stakes but rebounded to beat Journalism in the Pacific Classic by 3 ¼ lengths.
Forever Young 6-1
He finished third in this race last year behind Sierra Leone and Fierceness. He won in Japan in December and beat Romantic Warrior in the Saudi Cup in February but finished 3rd in the Dubai World Cup.
Sierra Leone 8-1
He won this race last year and he should be in the mix again for trainer Chad Brown. He won the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga in August and then had some bad luck last time out in the Gold Cup Stakes and still finished 2nd.
Mindframe 10-1
This is a horse that shouldn’t be forgotten, as he beat Sierra Leone by a length in the Stephen Foster Stakes and then had some bad luck last time out in the Gold Cup Stakes at Saratoga.
Breeders’ Cup Classic Notes
Bob Baffert is always a threat to win this race, as he won with Bayern (2014), American Pharoah (2015), Arrogate (2016) and Authentic (2020). Other trainers with two recent wins are Flavien Prat (Sierra Leone in 2024 and Flightline in 2022), Irad Ortiz Jr (White Abarrio in 2023 and Vino Rosso in 2019) and Joel Rosario (Knicks Go in 2021 and Accelerate in 2018).
The Breeders' Cup continues to grow and add races to its repertoire on an annual basis. This event was once just four races, but it has grown to include as many as 14 races over two full days of racing in any given year. The 2025 Breeders’ Cup will feature 14 races, five of which are held on Friday, and the remaining nine of which will encompass the best day of racing of the year on Saturday.
It’s a great two days as the first day features two-year-old horses that will be competing for the Triple Crown the following year. This will be the first time that these horses are seen by millions, and fortunes will be won or lost. The second day will feature the best of the best, although some owners are reticent to run their horses and risk injury if they already won a Triple Crown event.

Unlike other horse racing records that are largely dominated by the old guard, the Breeders’ Cup records are all held by relative newcomers since these events are still somewhat new. Mike Smith has been the king of the Breeders’ Cup for the jockeys, winning an absurd 27 titles during his distinguished career. John Velazquez is the second-most successful jockey in the event’s history.

Aidan O’Brien has been racking up wins in the Breeders’ Cup in recent years and he is now tied with D. Wayne Lukas for most trainer wins. Lukas has been one of the most successful horse racing trainers of the modern era. Lukas’ horses have claimed first place two more times than rival Bob Baffert but Baffert has been the trainer of two Triple Crown winners in the last two decades, American Pharoah and Justify.
