Soccer Odds - Southampton vs. Manchester United Match Preview

2017-Soccer-Southampton-vs.-Manchester-United-(NBCSN)-Betting-Odds

Manchester United's dream of finishing in the Top 4 in the Premier League this year are finished. The Red Devils were blasted at Tottenham, and now, they have no mathematical way of finishing with a Champions League spot without winning the Europa League. As a result, this match against Southampton is probably going to feel like a drab season-ending fixture without much in the way of passion on either side.

At 2:45 p.m. ET, tune into NBC Sports Network for live television coverage of this Premier League match on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at St. Mary's Stadium.

Odds Analysis

Had Man U won that match at White Hart Lane, it would have probably be favored by a greater margin in this duel. Instead, the Red Devils are only the narrow +165 choices, and we have a good sense that they are going to actually close on Wednesday as short underdogs instead. Southampton, does have just 45 points on the season, but St. Mary's has a history of being tricky to win at for the opposition even though six have done so this term.

The total of 2.5 tells the tale of Manchester United's lacking offense parlayed with one of the best defenses in England, allowing just 29 goals in the 36 matches to date.

Key Injuries

There's nothing new on the injury front for Manchester United. The Red Devils are without Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young. That's a lot of names out of the fold, but this is a problem Jose Mourinho has been fighting with for a while at Old Trafford.

Southampton lost Shane Long to an injured ankle against Boro over the weekend, and we don't know if he's going to be able to play for the rest of the campaign. That would be a huge loss for the Saints, though at this point in the season, it really doesn't matter any longer.

Recent Form

Soton wasn't good against Middlesbrough on the road on Saturday, but a win is a win. It was the first of its kind for the Saints since they took care of West Brom 1-0 back on April 8. Prior to the two-goal mini-explosion, Southampton had failed to score in three consecutive matches.

Clearly, Manchester United is going to need to focus in on its May 24 match against Ajax in the Europa League finale, and this match isn't going to mean a heck of a lot. The Red Devils have two draws and a defeat in their last three fixtures, and their last win in the EPL came against Burnley at Turf Moor on April 23.

Free Soccer Betting Pick

Mourinho has complained a ton about all of the fixtures which his Red Devils have had to play over the course of the end of the season, and he's not wrong to do so. Manchester United played nine matches in April and will play seven in May, and that's a heck of a lot for any team. With all of the injuries that have mounted in addition to that, it's no wonder why the Red Devils have slunk down the stretch.

This is an opportunity for Southampton to at least give the hometown crowd something to cheer about. We think it can get the three points in this one, but the bottom line is that the under is the right play between two teams who flat out don't really care about this match in the slightest and have really struggled to put the ball in the back of the net.

Premier League Odds: Southampton 1, Manchester United 0
