West Ham at Chelsea Match Preview

It’s make or break time for Chelsea. Maurizio Sarri knows that he is out as Chelsea’s manager if the Blues don’t finish in the top four. They were in good position for much of the year, but now they are trailing both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, and they are sitting in fifth. With just six league games left in the season (two of which are on the road against Liverpool and Manchester United), it’s time for Chelsea to make a move. They are heavy favorites to get the job done against an injury-riddled West Ham team on Monday.

Odds Analysis

West Ham are comfortably safe with 42 points, but their form has been diminishing as injuries have taken their toll. The Hammers have won just three of their last ten matches, and all three wins came at home. Two were against soon-to-be relegated clubs in Fulham and Huddersfield Town, and they needed to roar back from a 3-1 deficit to edge the Terriers. West Ham were relatively listless in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Everton on Saturday, managing just three shots.

Chelsea looked to be in great shape for a spot in the top four after a win over Spurs in late February, but a loss to Everton and a draw against Wolverhampton have the Blues trailing once more. They were very fortunate to come back and beat Cardiff City last Sunday, with two goals in the final seven minutes, but they looked much sharper against Brighton on Wednesday. Eden Hazard was brilliant in the win.

The first meeting between these two teams ended in a 0-0 draw. Chelsea fired 17 shots, but West Ham held firm in earning a result. A repeat will be more difficult this time considering their injury situation.

Key Injuries

Jack Wilshere, Winston Reid, Andy Carroll, Andriy Yarmolenko, and Carlos Sanchez will all miss this match for West Ham. The latter two players are done for the season and won’t return until next ear. Marko Arnautovic, Felipe Anderson, and Samir Nasri are all questionable to play.

Ethan Ampadu and Marco van Ginkel are both long-term injuries for Chelsea. Marcos Alonso and Pedro Rodriguez are questionable, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is questionable.

Player to Watch

Olivier Giroud has a spotlight on him. Giroud is not the goal scorer he once was, but he is the best option on Chelsea other than Hazard. Hazard is asked to create more than any other player on a Big Six Club, and it is up to Giroud to give him a good complementary option. Giroud has just five goals for Chelsea this season, but he opened the scoring against Brighton.

Prop Bet – Chelsea To Win To Nil +125

The Blues have not been great in defense this season, but West Ham are nearly bereft of offensive options. The Hammers have been shut out in three of their last five matches, and they have been held scoreless in their last two road games. They could barely get anything going versus Everton, and with Arnautovic and Anderson banged up, it’s hard to see them creating much offense.

Free Soccer Betting Pick

West Ham can be forgiven if they aren’t as intense as they were earlier in the season. They have already done enough to survive and finish in the middle of the table, and with so many injuries, I don’t think the motivation will be there.
