Soccer Odds - Atletico Madrid vs. Leicester City Match Preview

2017-Soccer-Atletico-Madrid-vs.-Leicester-City-(FS1-2)-Betting-Online

How unbelievable is it that Leicester City is one of the last eight teams standing in the Champions League? The squad that was on the verge of a disaster two seasons ago and could have ultimately found itself in the Championship last season instead won the EPL, reached the 2016-17 UCL and is now here with seven teams standing between it and the ultimate reward of winning the biggest club competition in the world.

Just one problem: Atletico Madrid is a significantly better team, and it's going to look at this matchup with Leicester City and likely scoff in the English side's face.

At 2:45 p.m. ET, tune into FOX Sports 2 for live television coverage of this Champions League match on Wednesday, March 12, 2017, at Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Odds Analysis

Even though Leicester City is in good form at the moment offensively, its defense is still quite suspect. Running into one of the best defensive sides in the world is going to provide one heck of a challenge for sure, especially playing here at Vicente Calderon. There's a reason why the Atleti are set at -317 on the moneyline and are favored by a goal and a half on the Asian Handicap. That said, the total of 2.5 is relatively low for a Leicester match, and one would think it would take an away goal to ultimately get to that total.

How They Got Here

The Leicester City story continues to get more and more incredible even though the team has slumped back towards the relegation zone this year and is no lock to even be in the EPL next season at this point. The Foxes picked up a dream draw in Group G with Porto, FC Copenhagen and Club Brugge, and the fact that they were able to get through that as group winners set them up for a manageable Round of 16 tie against Sevilla. Leicester found itself behind 2-1 on Spanish soil before coming back and winning 2-0 at home, a stunning result at the King Power Stadium for sure.

Atletico Madrid hasn't had a great year in La Liga, but its run in the Champions League has been marvelous. It went on the road and took care of Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 and came back home and just flat out sat on the German side by not allowing them a single step of space offensively in a scoreless draw here at Vicente Calderon Stadium. That came on the heels of beating out Bayern Munich in Group D while sweeping the board against Rostov and PSV Eindhoven with four wins in four fixtures.

It almost feels like the magic is never going to stop for Leicester City, but at some point, a team like Atletico Madrid just flat out takes it behind the shed and shoots it. The Foxes are at that point now. They just don't play well enough defensively to take care of Antoine Griezmann and the Atleti, and once they get ahead, it's nighty night for sure. If Leicester City scores more than once in this 180 minutes, we'll be surprised, and we don't think it's going to find a way to get that job done here in Madrid.

The story should be the same as that second match against the Germans for Atletico Madrid. Race out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, then pump the breaks, put 11 men behind the ball and dare Leicester City to try to not just get on the ball in the first place, but make any headway when they go get it. It won't be the prettiest match here in Spain, but this is the likeliest result we see.

Champions League Odds: Atletico Madrid 2, Leicester City 0
