Soccer Odds - Honduras vs. French Guiana Match Preview

Honduras-vs.-French-Guiana-FS1-bm

It's officially time to panic for Honduras and French Guiana. Neither one really expected to get anything from their first matches at the Gold Cup, but now that both have failed, they're both on the verge of elimination. Neither team can be formally knocked out on Tuesday night in Houston, but if there is a loser, that team will be facing a must-win situation in the final group match.

At 10 p.m. ET, tune into FOX Sports 1 for live television coverage of this Gold Cup match on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Odds Analysis

French Guiana had some moments of brilliance against Canada, but if we're being honest, it was never the better team on the pitch and was always staring defeat in the face. Once again, the newcomers to this tournament are going to be severe underdogs against a team that should be far superior.

Things were made even tougher for French Guiana based on the fact that Honduras was beaten by Costa Rica in its opening match in Group A. The Hondurans were technically the No. 1 seed in Group A, thus expected to get out of this group relatively easily. It won't be easy, as we surely know now, and all of a sudden, three points in this match is an absolute must. Anything less, and a win against Canada perhaps plus some help will be the only route to the quarterfinals.

All that told, Honduras has to be the overwhelming favorite in this fixture and is at -270 (and -1.5 on the Asian Handicap).

The total is a bit on the high side at 2.5 with -150 vig on the over, but after French Guiana and Canada played to six goals on Friday, it's hard to blame over bettors for wanting to pounce again.

How They Got Here

French Guiana's debut in the Gold Cup didn't yield any points, but it did produce two moments of brilliance. Facing a 3-0 deficit, French Guiana came up with two goals in quick succession, first from Roy Contout in the 69th minute, then again two minutes later from Sloan Privat. From there, the Canadians buckled down and finished the job, including netting the goal that killed the affair off to make the final score 4-2. If we're being honest, though, at least there were some moments to rally around for a country that is hoping to really start to build its soccer program.

Honduras was a much different case in its opening match in Group A. Marco Urena was the one goal-scorer of the match for Costa Rica, but Honduras was largely unlucky. For our money, Romell Quioto was the best player on the pitch on either side, and both he and Alberth Elis missed fantastic opportunities that would have put Honduras on the board. Honduras had 55 percent of the possession and had the greatest amount of scoring chances thanks to 15 shots, three of which hit the target. But in this game, when you can't ultimately score, you can't ultimately win.

The Hondurans might feel a lot of pressure in this match, but we'd bet that the tension will be eased from a relatively early goal. There were too many opportunities to score against Costa Rica to fail here against French Guiana.

The biggest problem French Guiana has is at the back. Even though Canada didn't have the greatest offensive showing in the world, the threatening opportunities were far too numerous. Quioto and Bryan Acosta should be licking their chops at the prospects of going against this defense. If that's going to be the case here against Honduras, there isn't much way we can see it failing to get the maximum three points.

Gold Cup Odds: Honduras 2, French Guiana 0
