Top Contenders

Bob Baffert has a trio of horses that will be major factors in this year’s Kentucky Derby in Roadster, Game Winner and Improbable. Roadster was able to catch Game Winner to win the Derby, while Improbable should be the favorite in Saturday’s Arkansas Derby. The other winners of the Kentucky Derby preps this past weekend were Tacitus who won the Wood and Vekoma who won the Blue Grass. There are eight horses listed with odds of +1000 or less. Instagrand was looking like the winner of the Santa Anita Derby until he was run down late by Roadster and Game Winner. Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby five times and he has two Triple Crowns, so it is hard to go against his three horses, Roadster, Improbable and Game Winner.

Tacitus was able to win the Wood Memorial even though he had a rough start, as he was bumped at the start. Tacitus leads the Kentucky Derby points and Tax and Haikal also earned enough points in the Wood to make it to the Derby.

Vekoma won the Blue Grass, while Win Win Win rallied to finish second and Signalman finished third. Vekoma is now second on the Kentucky Derby points board. Win Win Win also earned enough points that he should make the race, while Signalman is on the bubble.

There will be a Japan-bred starter in the Kentucky Derby for the first time ever, as Master Fencer has a guaranteed spot in the race. Two Japan-based horses have started the Derby in the past, but Master Fencer will be the first one bred in Japan to start in the Derby. "It is an honor to be able to participate in one of the world's greatest races," said owner Katsumi Yoshizawa. Master Fencer is listed as a huge longshot of +10000 in Kentucky Derby odds.

Saturday is another big day for Kentucky Derby hopefuls, as the $1 Million dollar Arkansas Derby will feature Improbable and Long Range Toddy, while the Oaklawn Park feature has Omaha Beach who beat Game Winner.

Kentucky Derby Betting Notes

There have been 39 different winners in the first 43 Road to the Kentucky Derby races this season. That means that this year’s Kentucky Derby could be extremely wide open. The highest priced favorite in Kentucky Derby history occurred in 2010 when Lookin At Lucky went off at odds of just over 6-1. Could we see this year’s Kentucky Derby favorite go off at odds of 6-1? It is possible, as there look to be at least six horses who have a good chance to win the Derby. “Notwithstanding the results of Saturday’s Arkansas Derby,” said Darren Rogers, senior director of communications and media services for Churchill Downs, “Lookin At Lucky’s 2010 record as the highest-priced Kentucky Derby favorite (6.30-1) could be in jeopardy. Tremendous betting opportunities loom in less than four weeks.”

The 2019 Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky and can be seen on NBC.
