NHL Odds - Rangers at Red Wings Game Preview

2017-NHL-Rangers-at-Red-Wings-Betting-Lines

The New York Rangers visit the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday afternoon in a game that can be seen on NBC. The Rangers have struggled lately, especially in goal while the Red Wings have made a minor surge to get back into playoff contention. These teams met early in the season in New York and it was the Red Wings pulling out a 2-1 win. The Red Wings have owned the Rangers at Joe Louis in recent years, winning 9 of the last 10 meetings.

At 12:30 p.m. ET, tune into NBC for live television coverage of this NHL game on Sunday, January 22, 2017, at Joe Louis Arena.

We'll have NHL odds at BookMaker.eu available for this and every game on the NHL Sunday schedule.

Odds Analysis

The Rangers have had two days to get ready for this game as they were in Toronto on Thursday night. The Rangers have been a very good road team as they were 15-7 in their first 22 road games with 13 going over, 8 going under with 1 push.

The Red Wings played in Buffalo on Friday and had Saturday off. Detroit has not been a good home team this season going 10-13 with 10 games going over, 10 going under with 3 pushes.

Special Teams

The Rangers have been good on the power play this season at 22.8% which is 5th in the league. New York has been relying on offense to win this season as they are 2nd in the league in goals per game at 3.5. The penalty killing hasn’t been that good as the Rangers are 16th in the league at 81.6% and overall the Rangers are not playing well on defense and they are getting poor play in goal. New York is allowing 2.7 goals per game which is 17th in the league.

The Red Wings are awful on the power play at 11.2% which is last in the league. Detroit is scoring 2.5 goals per game which is 23rd in the NHL. The Red Wings are 17th in the league in penalty killing at 81.2%. They are giving up 2.9 goals per game which is 22nd in the league.

Goalie Report

The Rangers have a major problem in goal as Henrik Lundqvist has lost his confidence. He has been awful lately and there are serious concerns that he may not regain his prior form. He is 18-13 on the season with a 2.89 goals against average but lately he simply can’t stop the puck. The backup is Antii Raanta but he is hurt so the Rangers had to call up Magnus Hellberg.

New York has not had an issue in goal since 2006 as Lundqvist has been one of the top goalies in the NHL. The Rangers were completely unprepared for this crisis as they don’t have a capable backup and their team was not built to play low scoring games.

The Red Wings have had similar issues in goal as Petr Mrzaek has been terrible while Jimmy Howard is hurt. The difference is that Detroit may have found an answer as Jared Coreau has played well for the most part since being called up. He is 5-2 with a 3.04 goals against average but he wasn’t very good in his last start as he gave up three quick goals to Boston.

Free NHL Picks

This series has been all about the Red Wings at the Joe as they have won 9 of the last 10 including the last three. The only win for New York in Detroit in the last 17 years came in 2013. Three of the last five in Detroit have gone under the total.

Despite the trends, I am going with the Rangers to get the road win and also playing the game over the total.

NHL Odds: Red Wings 5, Rangers 2
