NHL Odds - Philadelphia Flyers vs. Detroit Red Wings Game Preview

Philadelphia-Flyers-vs.-Detroit-Red-Wings-Betting-Lines

The Philadelphia Flyers will look to continue their push to a playoff spot, as they visit the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday on NBCSN. The Flyers have played really well of late, winning seven of their last ten games and they are now very much in the mix in the Metropolitan Division. On the other side, the Red Wings are struggling just to stay relevant in the Eastern Conference. Detroit is 10 points out of the last playoff spot in the East.

At 7:30 p.m. ET, tune into NBCSN for live television coverage of this NHL game on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Little Caesars Arena.

We'll have NHL odds at BookMaker.eu available for this and every game on the NHL Tuesday schedule.

Odds Analysis

The odds on this game should be near a pick with the total listed at 5.5. The Flyers are playing much better than the Red Wings, but this is a road game for Philly and the Flyers are also coming off a big game on Sunday against the Capitals. Philadelphia is also playing their third game in four days, as they were home against New Jersey on Saturday, in Washington Sunday and off on Monday.

The Flyers were 9-12 in their first 21 road games, with 11 games going over, 9 going under, with one push. They are scoring 2.9 goals per game and giving up 2.8 per contest.

The Red Wings will be playing with no rest, as they were in New Jersey on Monday. The Red Wings didn’t play well on Saturday, as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Carolina. Detroit is simply not getting enough shots and they are really struggling on the penalty kill. “It’s hard to get shots through, but we make it even harder when we have good chances and we’re passing up shots,” Henrik Zetterberg said to the Detroit Free Press after the Carolina loss. “We have to take our opportunities and get pucks on net.”

The penalty killing problem is due partly to injury, as forwards Luke Glendening, Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader all dealing with injuries. Head coach Jeff Blashill said depth is a problem. “Personnel has a great amount to do with it,” Blashill said, “Now, that doesn’t mean that the guys that are out there aren’t going to be real good killers. But they need reps. They need reps. Now we’d like them to get reps and not get scored on, but that’s part of it – they need reps, and they need to continue to work through it.”

Detroit is just 10-15 at home this season, with 13 games going over and 12 going under. They are scoring 2.6 goals per game and giving up 3 per contest.

Special Teams

The Flyers are 11th in the league on the power play at just over 20% but they have struggled on the penalty kill at 29th in the league. The Red Wings are actually slightly better on the penalty kill at 23rd in the league, but of late they have really struggled. Detroit is just 18th in the league on the power play at about 19%.

Key Stat

Philadelphia has won 7 of the last 10 in this series, with two of the last three going under. The teams met last month in Philadelphia and it was the Flyers winning 4-3. It has been a home team series for the most part, as the Red Wings have taken six of the last ten in Detroit, with the last three going under the total.

Free NHL Picks

The Flyers are the better team, but I still don’t trust them to win on the road. Detroit isn’t any good at home, so I will avoid a side and look at the total. Neither of these teams is very good in penalty killing and I think both power play units will have success in this one and that the game will go over the total.

NHL Odds: Red Wings 4, Flyers 3
