U.S. Open Golf Props

Sportsbooks go all out when golf’s major championships are on the schedule. That means this week’s U.S. Open will have plenty of wagering opportunities when the field pegs it up at historic Country Club of Brookline. With an expanded menu of prop bets, avid and novice golf fans have something to keep their interest over four days. Unfortunately there is no Tiger Woods in the field as he continues to mend from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Always a big draw at the betting window with a menu section all to his own, Woods will be missed. But we won’t be missing the increased betting options for the season’s third major.

The betting markets actually run deep this week with 156 of the world’s best golfers ready to attack a course that’s new to most in the field. This is the fourth U.S. Open at Brookline and first since 1988. Several players in the field, including eventual champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, competed in the 2013 U.S. Amateur, the last notable competition at the site located in a Boston suburb. There are, of course, the standard pick-the-winner and matchup bets. But the major championships unleash a host of additional wagering options. If you’re looking for a little side action, BookMaker is the right place. Let’s take a look at some of the prop bet options and find out where you can make additional coin while wagering on the U.S. Open.

U.S. Open Props

LIV Player Props

We expected this to happen and with Woods not competing it became a certainty. The big news in the world of golf, even overshadowing the hype of a major, was the inaugural event on the LIV Golf Series. Mickelson and Dustin Johnson were among the now former PGA Tour players to compete in London, and those who qualified are allowed to play in the U.S. Open on the directive of the USGA. So, why not have a prop menu featuring the LIV golfers? Here is a sampling:

Highest Finishing Position by LIV Player

Under 9.5 -115

Over 9.5 -115

With multiple major winners Mickelson and DJ in the field, along with such notables as Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and now Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed among the defectors to the LIV Golf Series, there is a serious threat to the UNDER winning this prop. And there are others involving the upstart league. How about this one:

LIV Players to Finish in Top-10

Under 1.5 -600

Over 1.5 +350

This bet has a little more bite to it considering the price. Again, while the PGA Tour tried its hardest to downplay the LIV Golf Series, words and actions of current Tour players and the commissioner suggest a bigger problem. Losing big names can do that and not being allowed to play in Tour events this is one final chance for guys to make a stand. And again, there are some quality golfers who flipped making the OVER with a nice return the smart play.

Hole-in-One at 2022 U.S. Open

Yes -155

No +125

There are limited opportunities for an ace at Brookline, but it’s a stock layout that isn’t long and the four par-3 holes all play less than 220 yards. Heck, DeChambeau could drive the next fairway on one of those holes. Assemble the best players in the world and great shots will happen with an ace favored to take place at any point in the tournament. So if you’re thinking about dropping a few bucks on YES why not take it in the early rounds. A first round hole in one is offered at +350 giving you more than your money back on that bet.

Will the 2022 U.S. Open have a Playoff?

No -500

Yes +350

Along with a hole-in-one this is always a popular prop on the board. And odds suggest we are due for some extra golf since there hasn’t been a playoff at the U.S. Open since 2008, the longest current stretch without a playoff of any of the four majors. In 1988 when the tournament was last played at Brookline, Curtis Strange won a playoff starting a stretch where three of four U.S. Opens went beyond 72 holes. There have been some close calls since ’08 with seven of the past 13 winners finishing one or two strokes ahead of the field.

2022 U.S. Open Top 10 Finish

Rory McIlroy +140

Justin Thomas +145

Scottie Scheffler +155

Jon Rahm +165

Xander Schauffele +200

Betting this market is a nice backup plan if you’re hesitant to pick an outright winner. There are no guarantees – that’s why it’s called gambling – and with such a strong field it’s tough to pick a champion. But if you want to hedge your bets you can at BookMaker by wagering on a top-10 finish. These are all good picks, but one player who stands out to me is Xander Schauffele. The X-man has been close so many times and enjoyed a marvelous five-year run at the U.S. Open between 2017 and 2021 finishing among the top-7 every time. He’s a good bet at his price.
