John Deere Classic Golf Matchups

Just a few weeks before the fourth and final major of the year most big names on the PGA Tour are using the time to rest. Thus we have a slimmed down field gathering in the Quad Cities area for the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. The field was thinned out even more with the withdrawal this week of betting favorite Daniel Berger. At No. 25 in the OWGR Berger was the highest ranked player in the field. Webb Simpson vaulted into the top spot on the odds board with numbers suggesting a wide open field. Simpson is the only player with shorter than 20/1 odds. That also opens up betting opportunities with some intriguing matchups across the lineup. Visit BookMaker.eu to check out the latest matchup odds and to place your wager.

Need to Know

The good news is that TPC Deere Run, which has hosted this event since 2000, has yielded a bunch of low scores over the years. The last 12 winners averaged 21-under par with nine of them finishing at -20 or better. Lucas Glover closed with a 64 to win last year’s edition by two swings at 19-under. In 2018 Michael Kim torched the layout to a record 27-under to win by eight swings proving that anyone can come up large in this tournament. Deere Run will have a different look with an additional 20 yards tacked on and the shifting of bunkers. Wide fairways keep the ball in play giving short accurate hitters an edge. The course typically offers up a number of birdie opportunities and the field has taken advantage in the past.

John Deere Classic Matchup Picks

Christiaan Bezuidenhout -101 vs. Jason Day

There are value picks out there and I think I’ve hit on a few of them. A solid performer on the European Tour with five wins, including back-to-back triumphs to close the 2020 season, Bezuidenhout has put together a strong first season on the PGA side going 14 for 18 with seven top-25s. His best results came in fields similar to what he’ll see this week and being a first year player he probably gets overlooked in the betting markets.

Cameron Champ +119 vs. Adam Svensson

Four straight MCs will make you a dog in just about every matchup and that’s the case with Champ. After a strong start to the season he needs to turn things around and this is the perfect situation for him. He wasn’t that far off before his current slump with a T10 at the Masters and a T6 at the Mexico Open. Forgiving fairways will aid his massive drives and if the rest of his game evolves he could be a contender for the outright. I’m always looking for value and there’s plenty with Champ at his current price.

Lucas Glover +100 vs. Nick Hardy

The last of Glover’s four Tour victories took place at this tournament last year and he appears to have a fondness for Deere Run. I guess the course can grow on someone if they play it enough, and Glover certainly has. This will be his 13th JDC start with the last two being his best. He claimed a top-10 in 2019 before winning it all in 2021. He even did well in the start before finishing among the top-25 in 2017. Over those 12 rounds he has a scoring average of 67.25 with three rounds of 64 or lower.

Lanto Griffin -118 vs. Kevin Streelman

It’s hard to go against the Chicago area native Streelman in this matchup, but Griffin has a history of stepping up in events with similar fields. His only Tour victory came a few years ago at the Houston Open and some of his best finishes have taken place in such events. He can also play with the big boys and looks to recapture the form that saw him amass six top-15s during a 15-start stretch earlier this season.

Adam Hadwin +119 vs. Webb Simpson

There isn’t much that separates the two outright favorites except for their price. Simpson appears to be back after dealing with an injury, but Hadwin is back and rested after taking last week off. Hadwin makes his first start in this tournament in a few years but proved then he could handle the course with a T18-T8 in those two outings. And he has to be feeling good after a T7 at the U.S. Open last time out, his best finish in any major.
