Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler lead a strong field assembled for the Scottish Open, which begins on Thursday at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Scotland. Many of the world’s top players are using this event to get ready for next week’s Open Championship, which will be held at Royal Birkdale. Five of the last six Open winners have used the Scottish Open as preparation. Four of the world’s top ten are in the field, led by Rory McIlroy who is ranked No. 4 and Fowler who is ranked No. 10. McIlroy is the second choice in the betting at +1050 behind Fowler, who is listed at +850.

Odds Analysis

Rickie Fowler +850

He won this event at Gullane in 2015 and then didn’t play last year. It is hard to argue with his form on links courses, as he tied for 8th at Royal Aberdeen in 2014. He has been in good form this year with six top five finishes. He is a deserving favorite this week.

Rory McIlroy +1050

Rory has been really good in Scotland in his career with three second place finishes, a third and a fifth but I don’t know how you can take him this week at low odds considering how poorly he is playing. He has a 35th place finish, a missed cut, a 17th place finish and a missed cut in his last four events. I am looking elsewhere.

Henrik Stenson +1450

You have to give Stenson a good shot this week considering Dundonald is located just down the road from Royal Troon where Stenson won last year’s Open Championship. Stenson has played well in Scotland of late with a 13th, 3rd and 8th place finish.

Alex Noren +1650

The defending champion is Noren but in the notes we find that no player has ever defended his title at the Scottish Open. Noren has done really well in Scotland in his career, but if you bet him to win you are bucking history.

Adam Scott +1850

I think there is a lot of value on Scott this week. He has a tie for 3rd and a tie for 10th in two of his last three events in Scotland.

Patrick Reed +2050

Reed has finished in the top 25 in seven of his last eight starts. He has three top 20 finishes in his three previous starts in Scotland. Reed is another player who I think has value this week.

Branden Grace +2550

Grace won the 2012 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, lost in a playoff in this event to Phil Mickelson in 2013, and he tied for 17th in 2015.

Peter Uihlein +4050

My longshot this week is Uilhein who tied for second at the 2013 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He tied for 10th in this event in 2013. He has two finishes in the top 14 in his last two starts.

Course: Dundonald Links is a par 72, which measures 7,242 yards. It is a great links course located along the Ayrshire coast between Troon and Irvine. It was designed by Kyle Phillips, who designed Kingsbarns and The Grove. Dundonald Links has hosted a number of top events including the last two Ladies Scottish Opens.

TV Coverage: Golf Channel

Notes: Alex Noren won last year’s Scottish Open at Castle Stuart, as he defeated Tyrrell Hatton by one shot. The win was a springboard for Noren who went on to win three more tournaments by the end of the year. No player has ever won the Scottish Open in back-to-back years. This will be the 35th staging of the Scottish Open, known as the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open. In the last ten years, players from eight different countries have won. Russell Knox is the highest ranked Scot in the field, as he is No. 48.
