2016-Top-Chef-California-Betting-Odds

With the "Top Chef" kitchen closed for the holidays, let's continue our look at this season's competitors. An episode from early December had its share of telling moments, and you can find all the Top Chef odds at BookMaker.eu.

It was the vineyard episode. Yes, the show already landed at a vineyard once this season and probably will at least one more time, what with this season being dedicated to traveling the California coast.

They got down to business fast. Real fast.

Padma Lakshmi and Dana Cowin greeted the chefs in front of the mountains to announce that there would be a sudden death quickfire. The winner would earn immunity from elimination while the loser would be forced to go head-to-head against another chef to stay in the competition.

The challenge was to create a dish highlighting some fresh fare from the marina and to pair it with one of the wines from the vineyard. Everyone faced different problems with this. Chad White doesn't drink, so pairing the dish with a fitting wine would be difficult. Giselle Wellman also struggled because her plan to do an egg dish was ruined when she couldn't find any eggs. (Interestingly, three other chefs could be seen using eggs during their prepping.) And Karen Akunowicz poured her soup into something decidedly not bowl-like and all was completely lost.

Grayson's crab salad with cucumber and uni went over well, paired with the "perfect" wine. The judges also loved Wesley True's creamed corn with uni and fennel, as well as Carl Dooley's sea urchin omelet which he paired with Chardonnay. Isaac Toups's uni potato salad was also a hit, as is his pairing it with a rose wine.

Coming up short: Angelina Bastidas created something far too salty as far as the judges were concerned, and... Giselle.

The overall winner of the challenge was Grayson.

Now here is the important part: Grayson has since been cut loose, as reported here on BookMaker already.

Three weeks in and one of the early front-runners is already gone. One with considerable talent. Does this bode well for a Giselle or Karen? Or more so for an Amar, who managed to shine alongside and - dare I say - in spite of Giselle?

I say all of the above.

The men are cattier than the women in this (moving) kitchen, with proof of that already materializing in a fight between Isaac and Phillip. Sure, the desert winds didn't help matters, what with their burners being blown out time and again, and Isaac being forced to describe his dish with a tablecloth over his head (much to Padma's dismay). But, this looks to be a season where keeping your cool is truly going to matter, plus serving up something spot-on.

Jeremy and Amar look good thus far, but my money might be on a female competitor this season.
