This election continues to give us more twists and turns than any US Presidential Election in recent memory. The world was aghast on Friday when video surfaced of Donald Trump making vulgar about women in an unaired clip from Access Hollywood. That led to Republican Party leaders stampeding away from him in droves prior to the second presidential debate on Sunday night. There Trump took a no-holds-barred approach with Hillary Clinton that led to some of the most shocking moments we have ever seen from a presidential debate.

THE VIDEO

The internet went wild when the video of Trump’s comments was posted on the Washington Post by David Fahrenthold on Friday. Fahrenthold was contacted by an unidentified caller early Friday morning about the video and later that day published the story that sent shockwaves through the campaign.

Many considered the video a death knell for Trump’s campaign. Even though his campaign has been filled with abhorrent remarks and face-palming claims, this was seen as the tipping point for the fortunes of his campaign. From the time that the video was published until the first debate, dozens of former supporters withdrew their support due to his remarks.

It’s interesting why this video drew such widespread condemnation when Trump has consistently said awful things over the course of his campaign. Maybe it was the use of a vulgarity, or perhaps the utter brashness of using the words he chose to use, but whatever it was, this more than anything else seemed to have struck a nerve.

THE SECOND PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

It’s going to take days to digest all that we saw last night. Trump set the scene for the debate a few hours before when he invited four women to attend a press conference that had all accused Bill and Hillary Clinton of wrongdoing. Among the four women were three that had accused Bill Clinton of sexual assault and one that accused Hillary Clinton of helping get a lighter sentence for a case in which she was the defendant’s court-appointed lawyer.

It was the latest in a long line of deplorable actions from Donald Trump and he placed the women in the front row of the audience in an attempt to shake Clinton after the press conference was over. Clinton did seem a little rattled early on in the campaign, but it’s unclear if it was that that did it or whether it was Trump coming out swinging when it came to the speaking portion of the Town Hall event.

Not long after the debate started, Trump was asked about his comments caught on tape. Trump dismissed them as “locker room talk” and later on seemed to deny that they ever occurred. Quickly, he tried to move past this and just two sentences into his response he brought up ISIS and how the terrorist organization is doing far worse.

Although not necessarily shocking that Trump wasn’t remorseful about his remarks, what happened next was stunning. Trump turned moderator Anderson Cooper’s follow-up question into an attack on Clinton and a declaration that Hillary and Bill Clinton were both much worse to women than he ever was. It was a jaw-dropping moment, but Trump has his back against the wall and is trying to turn this into as big of a mud-slinging contest as he possibly can.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS

The initial response seems to be mixed. Trump seems to have shored up his support and his performance was well-received enough that his running mate Mike Pence didn’t decide to leave the campaign as was rumored in some circles. His odds to win the presidency on BetFair and PredictIt also stopped plummeting and have somewhat stabilized.

However, although Trump was declared the winner of the debate in many unscientific polls, the early results of quick-reaction scientific polls have Clinton as the winner of the debate. CNN and YouGov both had Clinton winning the debate and a large percentage of people in both said that Trump was unfit to be the president.

Although Trump may not lose in a landslide or be replaced at the top of the ticket, it’s hard to see how he could win the presidency at this point. He has less than a month to make up quite a bit of ground and the media focus will be on tonight’s antics for so long he will have difficulty winning more people to his side.
