Political Odds: Presidential Betting Update

The Republican National Convention was expected to be both unconventional and controversial and we have experienced that after the first night of action. It’s hard to imagine the RNC failing to deliver at this point and the only question is what’s ahead over the next three days.

STEPHEN COLBERT

Before the RNC even kicked off, Stephen Colbert had already found a way to steal the news and make headlines. Colbert rushed the stage dressed as the game show host from The Hunger Games and started to mock the selection of Mike Pence as Donald Trump’s running mate and made a crack about how neither he nor Trump should be on stage as he was being hurried off the stage by staffers.

Colbert has openly mocked Trump for some time now and he will be broadcasting in Cleveland and ready to deliver his biting commentary with the help of Jon Stewart. The duo have a knack for making particularly savage pieces go viral and if they deliver a salvo that hits the mark against Trump, that could lose him some potential votes.

CHAOS ON THE FLOOR

Prior to the festivities kicking off in earnest with the speeches on opening night, there was one last gasp effort from Republican delegates disillusioned by Trump to block his nomination. A handful of states put forth a motion for delegates’ vote choices to be unbounded, but after initial success, three of the states changed their minds and the motion ended up failing. If it would have passed, Trump likely still would have won the nomination, but now he has dodged any bullets remaining in the gun of the anti-Trump movement.

PLAGIARISM

The story of the first night though was Melania Trump’s speech in support of her husband Donald. Melania had been hyped as someone who was articulate and motivational and that was a big reason why she was chosen to close out the first night of the convention. She delivered a powerful speech that resonated with the audience, but immediately after came under fire.

Despite Melania having six weeks with professional speechwriters to prepare herself for this moment, she appeared to have copied a whole paragraph from Michelle Obama’s speech in support of the current POTUS in 2008. As of Monday night, every major news outlet is leading with this story and the similarities are damning. Melania’s speech took whole chunks of Michelle Obama’s speech and only happened to change a handful of words around and the backlash on social media has been fierce.

It remains to be seen whether or not Melania’s gaff will cost her husband in the polls, but it certainly can’t help. Stories like this are ones that tend to stick throughout an election and of all things, this story looks like it could be the one that ruins Trump’s chances. On a national stage with the entire country watching, her theft of the First Lady’s words may be what brings Donald’s campaign to a grinding halt.

WHAT LIES AHEAD

Following the theme of Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again”, every night at the RNC is titled after one of the hot-button issues of this election. Monday night was “Make America Safe Again” and following that pattern Tuesday night is about jobs, Wednesday night is about putting America first, and Thursday night is about uniting the country.

His list of speakers for the last three nights of the convention are surprisingly bare and feature a lot of Trump’s friends and family members. Tuesday night will kick off with Donald Trump Jr. speaking and will also feature Ben Carson. Wednesday will have Eric Trump and the man who openly campaigned to be Trump’s VP, Newt Gingrich, and Thursday will have Peter Thiel and Ivanka Trump. The list doesn’t have the traditional political heavyweights that can electrify the crowd and further highlights what an unconventional campaign Trump is running.
