Part 1 kicked off with the top 10 contestants getting a chance to compete against “MasterChef” judges Graham Elliot and Gordon Ramsay. Later, the team faced the first of two elimination challenges, which took out four contestants.

It was determined via egg choice that Addison, Corey, Kaitlyn, JJ, Avery and Sam all wouldn’t be able to compete for a chance to automatically get into the top 8.

Blue Team: Amaya, Kaya

Red Team: Zac, Kamilly

Yellow: Gordon and Graham

Remaining judge Christina Tosi told the contestants that each team needed to make as many perfect deviled eggs as they could, within the designated time limit. The contestants had a five minute head start over the Yellow Team.

Zac and Kamilly managed to turn out 10 good deviled eggs, edging out the blue team, with only 6. The winning contestants were saved from the elimination challenge, and they headed directly into the top 8.

Meanwhile, the rest of the contestants got back to their stations. Graham talked to them about their aspirations as young home cooks, and they all shared their ideas for their future cookbooks. The challenge is everyone needed to make the signature dish that they would want to include in their first cookbook.

Avery and Amaya won the challenge by going back to their roots. They managed to produce signature dishes that truly reflected who they are. Avery’s bayou delight is a Crawfish Etouffee with steamed rice. It’s so good, Gordon asked for the recipe. Amaya also fared well with her classic Dominican dish, a Shrimp Asopao.

Kya Sam and JJ create dishes that were good enough to keep them safe, but were not spectacular enough to be called a chef’s signature offering. In the end, Addison, Kaitlyn and Corey ended up in the bottom three.

Kaitlyn ultimately got sent home. Corey, too, for completely raw Jerk chicken dish. Two down.

TAG TEAM CHALLENGE

The kids were put into four teams of two people, and only one of them could cook at a time. It was all about street food: samosas from India, arancini and marinara sauce from Italy, spring rolls from Vietnam, beef in steamed buns from China, and lamb kofta from Greece.

Zac’s big advantage for winning an earlier battle was that not only did he get to select his teammate, but he also got to pair up the other contestants. He took Kya, and paired Sam and Kamilly together, and Addison with Amaya, and JJ with Avery.

Amaya and Addison

These two argued the entire time. The judges were skeptical when they presented their food, but they ended up plating five strong dishes. Gordon couldn’t believe they pulled it all together, and reminded them that pressure can be healthy.

Zac and Kya

Zac and Kya immediately impressed the judges with how well they communicated. Despite this, they came up short and were sent directly to the bottom.

JJ and Avery

Like Amaya and Addison, these kids presented a platter with a few missing items, but unlike Kya and Zac, all of the items they did manage to plate were winners.

Sam and Kamilly

The samosa and spring rolls worked, but the judges were disappointed in the pair’s complete lack of communication.

Amaya and Addison, although not the best teammates, are great cooks, and the food they presented was well above the rest. They’re this season’s Tag Team Challenge winners.

Unfortunately for Kamilly and Sam, it was a done-deal that they’d be eliminated.
