Through the first half of America’s Got Talent’s history, singers dominated the competition. Five of the first six winners were singers with the only exception being ventriloquist Terry Fator.

Unsurprisingly, Fator had to beat out a singer, Cas Haley, to win Season 2’s competition. Although Fator is now a world-renowned ventriloquist and the most wildly successful person to ever appear on the show, the fact that he was the only one to beat out a singer speaks volumes about the first six seasons of the show’s run.

On a side note, Fator has made over $100 million as a ventriloquist performing stage acts. He signed a five-year, $100 million deal with The Mirage back in 2008 and continues to perform at the iconic casino in Las Vegas. That’s a pretty hefty chunk of change and far more than any contestant on any other show of this genre has made.

Over the last five seasons, there has been a notable shift in who ends up winning. Season 7 started the trend with the Olate Dogs, a troupe of 10 dogs performing various stage acts, winning and it has only continued from there.

Season 8’s winner was Kenichi Ebina, a dancer that combined various styles into an extremely palatable mix.

America’s Got Talent found another smash success with Season 9 winner Mat Franco. Franco’s innovative magic tricks helped redefine a talent that many considered dull and hokey, much in the same way that Fator did with ventriloquism. Franco received multiple standing ovations from both the audience and the judges for his showmanship and received a similar offer to Fator after he won the competition. He is now performing at The LINQ in Las Vegas and will reach his two-year anniversary there in a couple days.

The last two winners of the show were ventriloquist Paul Zerdin and Grace Vanderwaal. The latter was the first singer to win since Season 6, but it wasn’t just the vocals that put her over the top. Vanderwaal was a 12-year old that could play the ukulele and wrote her own songs too. To do all that at such a young age was an extremely impressive feat and helped lead her to a win.

Singers and dancers dominate the competitors that have already made it as one of the final 36 acts this season.

One of the favorites is 12-year old Darci Lynne Farmer. Farmer is a singing ventriloquist that was Mel B’s Golden Buzzer pick and she is sure to be a crowd favorite. However, it’s hard to see a niche child act win in back-to-back seasons barring something special from the youngster.

Dance crew Light Balance electrified the crowd with their performance during the auditions and their method of mixing LED lights in a dark studio with extremely talented dancers earned them rave reviews from the judges. A dance team has never won the competition, but many have finished well. They should be one of the top five betting favorites this season.

Perhaps the most intriguing contestant is Colin Cloud. Cloud is a magician who specializes in being a mentalist and his talent can leave you scratching your head and wondering, “How did he do that?” This could lead to him getting a huge following and he is one of the dark horses to win it all.
