Season 11 marks Simon Cowell's first season as a judge (and his return to TV), which every TV critic seems to think is going to make a huge difference as far as who gets through is concerned.

The show opened with a 6-year-old named Nathan. Simon started off his new gig joking around with the tot, which was good, as the kid was there to be a comedian. Nathan was not only the first contestant up, he was the first one through, too.

Next up was Jose and his dog Carrie. Not only did the dog dance with his owner, she wore a dress. Who would’ve thought that Simon would’ve said yes to a dancing dog, but he sure as heck did.

The third contestants were a solid reminder of how diverse the acts can be on this show. The Clairvoyants left everyone stunned with one half of the act (Emilie) being able to identify objects that her partner would findamongst the crowd. Howie declared that it was the most amazing thing he’s ever seen on the show. Literally.

Linkin’Bridge was probably the biggest surprise of the night, as they said they were inspired by RunDMC, Tupac, and N.W.A — except they were an a cappella group. They captivated the crowd, and the judges, including that "Idol" vet himself, Simon Cowell. No small feat.

Throughfour acts, there wasa sum total of one “no” from the judges.

That act? The Spice Girlz. For obvious reasons.

A group ofthree acrobatics followed up the Spice Girlz, and they had all the judges on board — but not without Simon finally coughing up some cantankerousness for his fellow judges.

What exactly happened in the next act remains up for grabs. A Japanese guy put on one heck of a mind-blowing magic show. He had all the judges raving over the performance, so we will obviously be seeing more of the guy. But more magic on "AGT?" Really?

The next act was a middle-aged married couple named Charles and Rose, who were way frisky. Rose danced around in a fringe dress while her hubby sang Elvis, and not well by any stretch of the imagination. Their charm won three of the four judges over, even making Simon vote with his heart and not his head to send them through. Definitely didn’t see that coming.

Then Tape Face came to the stage. He gave the judges no introduction, as he had a strip of tape across his mouth and wouldn’t take it off. I’m not really sure how to describe what he did, but Stern would've raved. Curiously, Simon called it “simple, clever, unique, funny, and brilliant,” and the guy gota roaring yes from all four judges.

After Tape Face Ryan Stock and his assistant AmberLynn were impressively grotesque. Ryan shoved a pair of scissors AND a meat hook up his nose…and that’s really all you need to know for now, especially because the judges (except Heidi) sent them right on through.

Suddenly we found ourselves back in the days of "Idol,"where mediocre singers drew various harsh comments from Simon. That is, until we met 13-year-old 8th grader Laura. She surprised everyonewith an insane opera routine that had some peoplein tears andallof the judges (and the audience) out of their seats. Laurawas so incrediblethat Mel B used the Golden Buzzer on her. Which sounds impossibly naughty, I know.

And then there was Greg from Daytona Beach, Florida. Despite his age of 61, he claimed to bethe most “danger-seeking” act of the night. Afterquite the build-up, Greg shocked everyone with what he did — because he did hardly anything at all. He jumped into an inflatable tub of shaving cream, and the judges were so not enthused. The epitome of anticlimactic.
