Clark Beckham found himself still struggling to be likable, not only with music guru Scott Borchetta, but now with the judges. He was given songs wherein he couldn't possibly shine by both. The first was U2's "Beautiful Day," which Borchetta assigned, and Beckham is, simply put, no Bono.

Still, the judges found favorable things to say, only to later give him a song from the "50 Shades of Grey" soundtrack, which his parents surely wouldn't let him watch. Harry lamented his verses didn't match the chorus, which is actually being kind. I thought it was a mess. Not even a hot one.

Beckham's homecoming song was "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," which is much more in his wheelhouse. But, would anyone buy a CD of this crooner singing this type of stuff. Look no farther than the judge area and ask Connick himself; when was the last time he had a hit?

Nick Fradiani fared much better, and deservedly so. The Connecticut native clearly responds well when the pressure is on, getting better and better the closer we get to the season finale, and the judges had little to say except "bravo" this night. Borchetta's choice for Nick was the least exciting song he sang, and still better than all else performed this week. He particularly shined with what the judges gave him: Edwin McCain's "I'll Be."

New Jersey's Jax cannot seem to regain her footing, and Borchetta giving her The Who's "My Generation" didn't help. Much like giving Beckham Bono, it begged the question, "Does the guy have it in for them?"

The judges were kinder and gave her a Paramore hit to do, which should have been a perfect fit. I thought she did OK with it, but they did not.

And then there were the homecoming montages.

Fradiani's was effective, and seemingly quite genuine. An entire town welcomed him, and a canned exchange between he and his music man father was touching. I can't say how folks from everywhere in the country could come away from watching it not liking the 29-year-old. Plus, he nailed his homecoming song, Andy Grammer's "Back Home."

Beckham's homecoming was less moving. Did he actually grow up in this town? Try as he might to reverse his image of being a brooding, distant loner, he just can't pull off being the goofy guy everyone remembers fondly from homeroom.

Jax's homecoming package was sweet, and her hometown song, "My Immortal," was well done. I see her and Fradiani squaring off on the season finale, which harkens back to season one's Kelly Clarkson/Justin Guarini match. Let's just hope there's no movie.

Beckham remains the favorite here at BookMaker, with odds of +110, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him clipped next week. Jax isn't far behind, at +140, with Fradiani coming up the rear at +400. Maybe I'm biased, as a fellow resident of Connecticut, but I see him winning this thing, and that's good money.
