The BEST
La’Porsha Renae tackled “Stayin’ Alive” and she owned it, too. She strut her stuff, did the pout and her voice was low but somehow spot-on.
The group Rebirth —Manny Torres, Maile Delgado and Christian Eason — delivered a cover of “Too Close” so strong they will probably be a vocal trio within six months of this final season wrapping anyway.
Trick or Treat Tribe —Kylle Thomasson, Kayce Haynes, Jon Klassen and Marcio Donaldson —brought rhythm, solid pitch and just a little touch of star quality to their performance, edging out several other lackluster performances over the course of the two nights.
Lindita went for a long, powerful run at the end of “Domino” and pulled it off. Her pals Joy Dove and Daniel Farmer brought some heat to the mix, too, though only the former advanced to the next round.
The WORST
Team Blue Eyes’ rendition of “Treasure” may have resulted in a resounding “yes!” from all the judges, but Jenna Renae and Kory Wheeler completely outperformed Kelsie Watts and Jordan Sasser, no two ways about it.
Young 'uns Tristan McIntosh, Lee Jean and Amelia Eisenhauer's gave some trio love to “Too Close” but it was plagued by overshot notes and a lack of real stage presence. They're in trouble; at least, as a trio they are.
Shelbie Z, Ashley Lusk and Michelle Marie moved to the next round. Shelbie — a veteran ofThe Voice - has been here before, and should be a bit better at navigating the reality TV obstacle course, though.
Anatalia Villaranda dropped out of the group Envy and joined Dalton Rapattoni and Kassy Levels’ Chicken Noodle Soup (after Poh’s voluntary exit). Their collective vocals, unfortunately, weren't nearly as interesting as their behind-the-scenes drama. And while the former group’s remaining members — Sonika Vaid, Stephany Negrete and Andrew Nazarbekian – got the “Mean Girls” edit, I honestly didn’t blame them for ditching Anatalia and her nightmare mom.
ALSO… Shi Scott’s sister Poh dropped out of the race a few hours into group rounds, as mentioned, explaining she just wasn’t ready for this craziness. She might have feared she wouldn't make the cut anyway and just wanted to save face.
I predict a Jenna Renae vs. La’Porsha Renae finale?
Trent Harmon’s is really, seriously, crazily talented —but, he needs to really be careful about the exaggerated facial expressions heading into the unforgiving close-ups of the live rounds.
There is a LOT of talent here, but final season or not, interest in the hit series has waned, and there better be some very real spark, and soon.
