American Idol Odds To Win - Final Season; Going Out With A Bang

What else could the final season of the reality competition that "started it all" (as opposed to "Survivor" - a different beast altogether really) be other than nostalgic? For months now we've seen trailers that basically reside on Memory Lane. Kelly Clarkson extolling the virtues of the series, Carrie Underwood giving thanks, and so on.

After auditions this past summer, an estimated 200 + contestants from all across the country flew into Hollywood in October 2015. They performed for the judges for the first time since being put through to Hollywood Week after their initial audition.

The elimination process then took place, as the contestants were called back on stage in their groups to hear their status. Judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban took turns addressing each group to tell them their fate. Certain contestants were called to step forward, the ones who did were either saved or sent home.

By the end of the week, Hollywood round ended up with 48 contestants. In a show first, Hollywood Week has been split into two sessions. The remaining 48 contestants returned to Hollywood at the beginning of December for a showcase round. The contestants worked with Ricky Minor and the band and new mentor for the show Scott Borchetta, the founder of "Big Machine Records." The contestants did a final showcase for the judges on a Monday, and by that Wednesday the Top 24 were chosen.

Rumor has it that Season 15 opens with gauzy scenes of folks supposedly watching some of the winners being named over the years with kids who are ultimately inspired to try out themselves. (Two curious seasons skipped:Taylor Hicks and Kris Allen.)

Then there’s a flashback to June 11, 2002:Brian Dunkelman(remember him?) andRyan Seacrestintroduce the show in what was then called the Kodak Theatre, where the winner was going to be crowed a few weeks later. That theatre, now called Dolby, will also be the site of the series finale come April.

Two audition cities are mentioned: Atlanta and Denver. Interestingly, Seacrest is back in Denver, and shows up a few times talking to contestants before and after.

Former contestants are trotted out:Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Taylor Hicks(who shows up in Denver for both the early and judges’ rounds) and evenLee DeWyze.

And Seacrest briefly interviews label honcho and mentorScott Borchettawith last year’s winner Nick Fradiani to remind folks that Fradiani is still “in play” as a potential star since his album isn’t even out yet. (Editor's Note: As a Connecticut resident, where Fradiani hails from himself, I've got high hopes; he's a talented, likable vocalist who's doing everything he's told to do.)

One of the best singers comes from Massachusetts, a woman thatHarry Connick Jr.boldly says could win it all. Based on her first audition, she is impressive.

The final “contestant” of the two hours isn’t a contestant at all but a pure gimmick:Kanye West. We've all seen a glimpse of the faux audition. Soon we get to watch the whole thing.
