Wednesday night's "Idol" installment got more difficult to watch as time went on. The performances got worse, yet the judges' feedback grew more positive. This is the final season - it's no time to be charitable, especially when some of the performances bordered on excruciating.

The only worthwhile performances were the first two.

Stephany Negrete |This gal can win the whole thing, and it wouldn't be a travesty. She looked great, sounded really good, and worked the stage well.

MacKenzie Bourg |MacKenzie could have picked a better song than the plodding "Say Something," but the kid's super-talented and delivered a soulful, moving rendition.

Jeneve Rose Mitchell |Admittedly, Jeneve sounded pretty singing her Sarah McLachlan cover, but this off-the-grid cloying young lady working an enormous harp on "American Idol" is wrong on every level imaginable. Cut her loose now; she stands no chance of cracking the Top 10, let alone winning.

Jenna Renae |This would be the last listenable performance of the night.

By Thursday night I was ready for some seriously better performances. I got them, but they were few and far between, and by the end of theepisodefive singers would be gone and the first half of the Top 14 would be in place.

It was duets night, and some past winners returned to help the contestants. Highlights included:

La’Porsha Renae and Fantasia Keith gave this a standing O. JLo said she's amazing and Harry seconded that, plus added that she and Fantasia both killed it.

MacKenzie Bourg and Lauren AlainaWeird pairing, but Keith loves this kid.

Avalon Young did a duet with Ruben Studdard, and the judges are just wild about her.

Thomas Stringellow and Nick Fradiani This worked. Nick was/is clearly the better singer, but Thomas held his own. This was a good performance.

By the time all was said and done, Emily Brooke, Stephany Negrete, Jenna Renae, James VIII and Jordan Sasser were gone.

The first half of the Top 14 includes La'Porsha Renae, Sonika Vaid, Avalon Young, Gianna Isabella, Thomas Stringfellow, Mackenzie Bourg, and Jeneve Rose.

The next seven are sweating it out as we speak.
