You’ll Want to See Floyd Mayweather’s Odds Against Andre Berto For September 12

Floyd-Mayweather-Jr.-vs.-Andre-Berto.ac

If this truly is the last fight for Floyd Mayweather Jr. – 48-0, 26 KOs – he’s not making a very big statement at the end of a legendary career. The pound-for-pound great will face Andre Berto – 30-3, 23 KOs – a semi-respected boxer who’s just 3-3 in his last six bouts. That sentiment is reflected in our current odds.

CURRENT ODDS

Our online boxing odds currently list as a 35-to-1 favorite, with a -3500 money line. Berto is a huge underdog at +1500. The total rounds for this fight is set at 11.5, with the over at -225 and the under at +190. Because this is a Mayweather fight, expect more prop bets than usual. The full list of odds will be finalized on fight night, with live betting also available after the bout begins.

THE END OF AN ERA?

Mayweather has repeatedly stated that he would retire after this bout, which is the last of a six-fight deal he signed with Showtime/CBS in 2013. With a victory, “Money” would tie the benchmark 49-0 record of the famed Rocky Marciano. I’m one of those people who think that Mayweather will probably come back for at least one more fight, because 50-0 just sounds so much better.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring on September 12 and prove again to the whole world why I’m the best ever,” Mayweather said. “I always bring my A-game, and this fight against Andre Berto is no exception. He’s a young, strong fighter who is hungry to take down the best. 48 have tried before, and on September 12, I’m going to make it 49.”

Although Berto is a two-time welterweight champion who currently holds an interim belt, many consider him an easy fight for Mayweather.

“I’m coming to kick Floyd’s ass,” Berto stated. “Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I’m not concerned about what 48 other fighter have been unable to do. Somebody is getting knocked out, and it won’t be me. You don’t want to miss this.”

While Berto is obviously trying to drum up some buzz, this feels like an anticlimactic way to go for Mayweather, who is fresh off “The Fight of the Century” with Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather cruised to a unanimous decision against the Filipino superstar, though the fight fell far short of the anticipation.

The dream matchup for fans would have been knockout artist Gennady Golovkin, who has looked like a nightmare. 28-year old Amir Khan would have been a worthy contender as well, and he tried for months to make the match happen. Even rematches against Canelo Alvarez or Miguel Cotto would have been worth watching. But instead, we get Andre Berto, and nobody’s particularly happy about it.

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Mayweather booked himself a squash match, and the odds show it. Berto is not fast enough and doesn’t have the power to put the champ in any sort of danger.

If you’re going to bet on this fight, Mayweather to win is a sure thing. However, it’s going to be really expensive. The best value in this fight is probably the over on 11.5 rounds. Although Berto is outmatched, Mayweather rarely strays from his game, and that doesn’t involve putting guys on the mat. At -225, the under is a much better play than Mayweather straight up to win.
