Updated betting lines for Devon Alexander - Aron Martinez October 14 card on ESPN

Devon-Alexander-vs.-Aron-Martinez-Card.ac

Don’t have anything to do next Wednesday night? ESPN has a pretty good Premier Boxing Champions card slated for October 14. We’ll get to see former two-division titleholder Devon Alexander - 26-3, 14 KOs, current featherweight champ Lee Selby - 21-1, 8 KOs - and heavyweight prospect Joseph Parker - 15-0, 13 KOs - on free cable television. Let’s break down the odds for each fight.

HEADLINER:

DEVON ALEXANDER -2500 vs. ARON MARTINEZ +1000

No surprises here, as this is pretty much a tune-up fight for Alexander. The 28-year old former champion is struggling lately, losing two of his last three. His loss to Amir Khan this past December had to have been especially demoralizing, as he was nearly shutout in a unanimous decision loss.

Martinez isn’t very well known, but he did come out of nowhere to give welterweight contender Robert Guerrero serious problems in a split decision loss. However, he’s lost three of his last four and has only fought four times since late 2012. You’d probably want to stick with Alexander here, although Martinez could make it closer than you think.

LEE SELBY - 2500 vs. FERNANDO MONTIEL +1000

In what could be another squash match, Welsh champion Lee Selby makes his first title defense against Mexico’s Fernando Montiel. Selby claimed the 126-pound title on May 30 by battering Evgeny Gradovich en route to an eight-round technical decision. He’s also stated a desire to eventually face featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz in the future. But first he’s got to get through Montiel.

The 36-year old Montiel is a former three-division titlist on an eight-fight win streak. While he’s past his peak, he’s definitely not done yet. While I do think that Selby pulls out the victory, he’s also never faced anybody with Montiel’s experience. He might have some issues in the early going, but he’s skilled enough to win this handily.

JOSEPH PARKER -1667 vs. KALI MEEHAN +700

Parker and Meehan both heavyweights from New Zealand, but that’s where their similarities end. The 45-year old Meehan has nearly 50 pro fights, and a pretty impressive 42-5 record for 18 years in the sport. Parker is only 23 years old and a relative newbie with only 15 fights. But fights aren’t won by resumes.

Parker is the powerful young stud, while Meehan is the old guard. It’s a great test of Parker’s potential. While I think the age gap will be too much for Meehan to overcome, his veteran savvy could make this an extremely interesting fight.
