Terry Flanagan Opens As a Slight Favorite Over Diego Magdaleno Oct 10 Title Bout

TerryFlanagan-vs-DiegoMagdaleno-Sept21

Diego Magdaleno - 28-1, 12 KOs - has a massive obstacle on his quest for a world title: the hulking Terry Flanagan - 28-0, 11 KOs. Although Flanagan fights in the 135-pound division, the champion appears to easily walk around over 150 pounds. But even with the size difference, Magdaleno isn’t much of an underdog in the sportsbook.

CURRENT ODDS

Our online boxing odds have Flanagan as -150 favorite, with Magdaleno coming in at +120. Expect the total on rounds for this 12-rounder to be set at 11.5 rounds, with the over being the far more expensive play. Prop bets, such as what round the fight will end or how it’s finished are usually released shortly before fight night. Because BookMaker updates their odds daily, expect the lines to shift as action starts coming in.

FLANAGAN, SMASH

There’s no question that Flanagan probably cuts an enormous amount of weight to fight at 135. And there might not be a fighter who’s better at using his size advantage. By fighting against smaller guys, the champion can basically bully other fighters into submission. If he were fighting at 147, against the Miguel Cottos and Mayweathers of the world, there’s no way he’d be as successful.

A native of Manchester, Flanagan will be fighting at home to make his first title defense. He won the belt against Jose Zepeda this past July, when the American had to retire after the second round after suffering a dislocated left shoulder.

Magdaleno has fared well since losing for the first time to Rocky Martinez in 2013. After that split decision loss, he’s now won five in a row. His last bout against Jose Gonzalez wasn’t without controversy though, as Gonzalez refused to continue after Magdaleno landed an inadvertent low blow.

Frank Espinoza, Magdaleno’s manager, understands the enormous task his fighter faces. “Diego understands that he has to go in and take the fight to Terry, considering he is fighting in his hometown. He’s learned from the Martinez fight, but I believe in having a trainer like Joel Diaz could be the deciding factor in the fight.”

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Magadaleno isn’t a very well-known fighter, particularly because he doesn’t seem to stand out in any area. He’s not particularly fast or a skilled technician. But what holds him back the most is his lack of power. If he just packed a little more juice in his fists, he could be a talented fighter.

Against a bigger fighter like Flanagan, Magdaleno’s feather fists will be his downfall.I fully expect the champ to trap Magdaleno against the ropes and just start unleashing. While Flanagan doesn’t have many knockouts to his name, he does have snap when he throws. He should be able to do enough damage to win a unanimous decision.
