Juan Ubaldo Cabrera and Mike Gavronski Meet as Co-Feature of August 28

Juan-Ubaldo-Cabrera-vs-Mike-Gavronski-wager

Undefeated Juan Ubaldo Cabrera – 23-0, 16 KOs – is the number one-ranked middleweight in the Dominican Republic, and now he’s coming stateside. The two-time Olympian is scheduled to meet Tacoma’s Mike Gavronski – 18-1-1, 12 KOs – on an August 28 Shobox card as the co-feature, and U.S. boxing fans can judge for themselves on the potential of Cabrera.

CABRERA’S COMING OUT PARTY

Just two years after his last appearance in the Olympics, Cabrera turned pro at the age of 26. The Dominican won 13 of his first 15 fights by way of knockout, drawing some buzz as a potential prospect in a crowded middleweight division. Most recently, Cabrera notched an eight-round unanimous decision win over Tim Hall on the Wilder-Molina undercard last June. However, the fight against Hall was his first in a year and only his sixth since July 2009.

Gavronski comes into the match on a four-fight win streak, with three of those wins coming just this year. The 29-year old Washington native is a durable, well-conditioned athlete who has an adequate blend of skill and power. In his last fight, he downed Tyrell Hendrix with a ninth-round TKO in a rematch of their 2011 draw. His lone loss came against the well-regarded Tuerano Johnson in 2011.

Most of the boxing world is interested to see how good Cabrera can be, as he’s been impressive against mid-tier opponents. Now 36 years old, the time for the Dominican to make a move is now. While Gavronski isn’t the type of signature win that will get you a big-money fight, he’s definitely a respectable guy at this stage in Cabrera’s career. If the Dominican can make a statement on Showtime, he has a solid case to fight a top-10 opponent in his next bout.

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The tale of the tape shows Cabrera at 6’1”, fighting in an orthodox style. Gavronski is an inch shorter at 6’0”, but is six years the junior. Neither man packs extraordinary power, but Cabrera has a slightly better KO ratio.

Cabrera’s inactivity over the past few years may come back to haunt him in this bout. While he’s the better all-around boxer, his age and physical decline could work against him against the younger, tougher Gavronski. Also, Cabrera’s level of competition has been laughable at times. I can see Gavronski taking the former Olympian by surprise and stealing enough rounds to win a close decision. If he’s an underdog, Gavronski is worth a small bet.
