Jamie McDonnell and Tomoki Kameda Dead Even Rematch on CBS September 6

Jamie-McDonnell-vs-Tomoki-Kameda-Aug31

The first time British WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell – 26-2-1, 12 KOs – met Japan’s Tomoki Kameda – 31-1, 19 KOs – the two put on a thrilling, action-packed fight on May 9. Now, it’s time for the sequel. And oddsmakers have no idea who the favorite is.

CURRENT ODDS

Our online boxing odds have tabbed this as a pick’em bout, with both McDonnell and Kameda’s money lines at -115. The total for this 12-round bout will likely be set at 11.5 rounds, with the over in chalk territory. Prop bets, like what round the fight will end, are typically released on fight night, so remember to check back in for the latest updates.

CAN THE SEQUEL BE BETTER?

The first time these two met, Kameda floored McDonnell in the third round with a huge right hand. But McDonnell got back up and threw everything he had to earn a unanimous decision win. All three judges scored the bout 114-113 – a score that accurately depicted just how close the fight was.

“I am delighted to be going back to the States facing Kameda again,” said McDonnell. “The first fight was brilliant. He’s a class act, and I wish that the first fight had gone on even longer. People wrote me off before the first one, but I was always confident that I would beat him, and I am even more confident that I will do it again. If I start well this time, I think I will stop him.”

Kameda vacated his bantamweight title for the chance to avenge his only career loss. The 24-year old Japanese native has been vocal about his feeling that he should have won the first fight.

“This is the fight that I wanted, and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to rematch Jamie McDonnell,” said Kameda. “I thought that I won the first time, but this time I will leave no doubt. I can’t leave it up to the judges this time; my plan is to dominate.”

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

McDonnell is riding an 18-fight winning streak going into the bout, with 10 of those wins coming by stoppage. The 29-year old Briton’s career has never been hotter. While he doesn’t have much power, he is spry and agile and a sound technical fighter.

While Kameda is five years younger than McDonnell, he is three inches shorter and will give up six inches in reach. He was able to get inside early in their first go-round, but McDonnell was able to find his range and pull away in the latter half of the fight.

I think McDonnell is in a groove right now, and he was able to figure out Kameda. Seeing as this is an immediate rematch, I don’t see the fight changing much the second time around. McDonnell should be able to hold his distance and beat Kameda at his range in a decision.
