Heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz heavily favored over Matias Ariel Vidondo for Golovkin-Lemiuex undercard

Undefeated heavyweight contender Luis “ King Kong” Ortiz - 22-0, 19 KOs - was supposed to face former world titleholder Bermaine Stiverne in what would have been a compelling test for the up-and-comer, but that bout made too much sense for the world of boxing. So naturally, he’ll face an unknown Matias Ariel Vidondo - 20-1-1, 18 KOs on the Golovkin-Lemiuex undercard - and it’ll be for a vacant interim world title.

CURRENT ODDS

Unsurprisingly, our online boxing odds have Ortiz as more than a 30-to-1 favorite at -3333. Vidondo is a massive underdog at +1200. Expect a low round total for this fight, as Ortiz has a habit of putting away opponents early. KING KONG SMASH

Another day, another squash match in the sport of pugilism. Ortiz, a former Cuban amatuer standout, has shown plenty of promise as a heavyweight puncher. It would have been awesome to see him against the likes of Stiverne to see where he truly stands in the division. Instead, we get to see him face a nobody who probably doesn’t belong in the ring with him.

Ortiz is trying to see the cakewalk in the best light. “The only way to be the best is to beat the best, and taking on Matias and fighting for the interim WBA heavyweight world title is a big step to proving that I am the best. But I am more than ready, I am too fast and too strong for Vidondo and I will prove that on October 17. My dream has always been to become the heavyweight champion of the world and this fight is a big step closer to that dream.”

About that WBA title, it’s an interim belt, which is basically a third-tier championship from one of boxing’s numerous organizations that already recognizes Wladimir Klitschko as its champ and Ruslan Chagaev as the “regular” champ. In other words, it’s basically a meaningless souvenir.

Vidondo will be fighting in the U.S. for the first time, and has never faced an opponent remotely close to Ortiz’ caliber. The only reason that he’s in the ring in the first place was that Golden Boy Promotions likely struggled in locking down an opponent so close to fight night.

“Making my U.S. debut while fighting for the interim WBA heavyweight world title is a big opportunity for me. I will get to showcase my power in front of a national stage and on the undercard of one of the biggest nights in boxing this year. I promise my fans and Argentina that I will not let them down. I will be victorious on October 17 and bring home a title.

WHAT TO BET ON

Seeing as you’d have to bet $3,333 on Ortiz to win a paltry $100, you probably don’t even want to bother on betting Ortiz to win outright. You might want to try your luck with a parlay with that bet as the baseline. I’m sure betting the under on rounds will be plenty expensive as well, but pairing that will increase the value of your play.

If you’re feeling really lucky, take a stab at the prop bets, which should have stuff like Ortiz to win by KO and odds for the fight to end in a specific round. Calling which round the fight finishes is a total crapshoot, but Ortiz to win by KO is a pretty safe play here, and should have the best sure value of the bunch.
