Devon Alexander set to meet Aron Martinez on October 14 ESPN PBC card

Former two-division titleholder Devon Alexander - 26-3,14 KOs - is on a mission to become a champion again. To do that, he’ll have to get through 33-year old Aron Martinez - 19-4-1, 4 KOs - in a headlining bout on ESPN. It’s the perfect opportunity for the former champion to get back on track in front of a national audience.

In this 10-round about, the total on rounds is likely to be set at 9.5 rounds, with the over being the more expensive bet. Prop bets, such as what round the fight will end or how it’s finished are usually released shortly before fight night. GETTING BACK ON TRACK

Alexander is probably desperate to get back in the win column after suffering a humiliating one-sided defeat at the hands of Amir Khan last December in Las Vegas. It was the kind of loss that can make people doubt whether you belong in the elite tier of fighters.

In that fight, Alexander failed to mount any offense or score significant points. This is surprising because fighters like Chris Algieri, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia all followed the same blueprint in beating Khan - relentless pressure. Alexander couldn’t get anything going in what amounted to a 12-round beatdown.

“I’m very excited to return to the ring and I’m anxious to show people that I’m still an elite fighter,” said Alexander. “This is a huge opportunity to be on prime time and I’m going to make sure that everything is in order at camp so I’m there 100 percent mentally and physically on fight night.”

Martinez, a native of Mexico, has lost three of his past four fights and has only been in action four times since late 2012. However, many feel that he did enough to beat champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in his last fight. In that matchup, Martinez floored Guerrero in the fourth round and gave him some serious trouble before losing a contentious split decision.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to fight on such a big stage against a great fighter in Devon Alexander, “Martinez stated. “Arizona has a huge Mexican boxing community and I look forward to the support from their terrific fans.”

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Don’t expect Martinez to surprised Alexander the way he did with Guerrero. Martinez isn’t known for his power, so the knockdown he scored against Guerrero was probably a flash in the pan. The Mexican native should be the crowd favorite going into the match, but you could argue that he’s the inferior fighter in every major boxing skill.

Although Alexander was trounced by Khan, he’s still just 28 years old. The native of St. Louis is still operating at his athletic peak, and don’t forget that he owns victories against top guys like Lucas Matthysse and Marcos Maidana. I doubt Martinez could even touch those guys. Alexander might be an expensive bet, so you might want to take a look at the total and prop bets for a better payout.
