Charlo a massive favorite over Alcine on this Saturday’s NBCSN Premier Boxing Champions Card

Undefeated junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo - 26-0, 11 KOs - is looking to follow the footsteps of his twin brother, world champion Jermall Charlo. Beating a former titleholder like Joachim Alcine - 35-7-2, 21 KOs - can help him. And according to oddsmakers, it shouldn’t be too hard for Charlo to do so.

CURRENT ODDS

Check our online boxing odds for the latest money lines on each fighter, and expect Charlo to be a massive favorite, in the -3300 range. Alcine should clock in at around +1200. In this 10-round bout, I’d expect the total on rounds to be set at 9.5, with the over being the slightly more expensive play. Prop bets are usually released on fight night, with live betting available after the bout begins.

CHARLOS IN CHARGE

Last March, the 25-year old Charlo notched a career-best victory over longtime contender Vanes Martirosyan in a close unanimous decision. About a month ago, his older twin brother Jermall scored a junior middleweight world titles in a third-round KO win against Cornelius Bundrage. The twins have a goal of holding world titles at the same time.

A win over Alcine doesn’t mean as much as it used to. The 39-year old is just 2-5-1 in his last eight fights and hasn’t been in action since a contentious draw against Delvin Rodriguez in May 2014. While there are a score of quality opponents on his resume, Alcine has failed to score an impactful win since 2011, when he beat future world champion David Lemieux.

“This is a good fight against a former world champion,” said Charlo. “He’s experienced, and he’s been in the ring with the multiple world champions. I’m not taking anything away from him, but Houston is my town. I’ve been anticipating another fight here. I’m ready to go, and I’m going to put on a great show.

Alcine is looking forward to the opportunity to get his career back on track against one of the top 154-pounders in the division. “I am so excited for this opportunity to compete against a young, strong fighter like Jermell Charlo,” Alcine stated. “I don’t think he’s faced a fighter with my level of experience in big fights. I am not going to make it easy for him. I am going to challenge Charlo like he has never seen before.”

Also scheduled for the card is junior middleweight prospect Tony Harrison - 21-8, 18 KOs, who’s looking to rebound from his first career loss in a matchup with Cecil McCalla - 20-2, 7 KOs. McCalla is coming off a loss to Ishe Smith this past April.

WHO YOU SHOULD PICK

Alcine is not the same fighter as the one who won a world title. He’s older, slower and weaker now, and Charlo is a young stud on the way up. Consider this a showcase fight for the contender and take the easy money by picking Charlo to win. Because Jermell really isn’t a big puncher, the over is also a solid play - and one that could return better value as well.
