Though Conor McGregor rose to fame as a UFC fighter and currently holds the lightweight belt, he has yet to fight inside the octagon in 2017. The Irishman took time off to attend the birth of his son, then the whole Mayweather thing happened. Now, it’s possible that McGregor may never fight inside the octagon again.

Currently, you can bet on whether McGregor will take part in an MMA match in 2017 with the boxing prop odds at BookMaker.eu. It’s a compelling question that appeals more to MMA fans, as boxing fans likely won’t care whether he does or doesn’t. But right now, oddsmakers at top-rated sportsbooks are definitely favoring “No”.

Inside the Boxing Odds

First of all, a winning “Yes” answer means that he gets into the cage and actually fights. If Mystic Mac is scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov on December 1, then Khabib pulls out with an injury and the matchup actually takes place on January 1, you lose that “Yes” bet.

Now that we have the technicalities out of the way, let’s get into which way you should bet. First, there have been rumors that Conor wants Nurmagomedov in Russia in December. The sources? UFC president Dana White and McGregor coach John Kavanagh:

“He seems very, very motivated to go to Russia in December,” Kavanagh told reporters at media day for UFC Fight Night 113. “I don’t know if he’s been watching Rocky IV or something lik that.”

In an interview with MMAJunkie, Dana White stated “[McGregor] said, ‘I want Khabib in Russia.’ Isn’t that (expletive) awesome? He’s awesome. Conor McGregor is a (expletive) unicorn. There’s nothing like him. He’s working on boxing Floyd Mayweather then he’s talking about fighting Khabib in Russia right after.”

Even with both men already hyping up the potential fight, there are still a lot of issues that might prevent McGregor fighting MMA this year. First, he’d only have about four months to negotiate a fight, get contracts signed and put together a training camp.

While that’s plenty of time to accomplish all those things, there’s a chance that McGregor gets medically suspended after his matchup with Mayweather. Khabib might still be injured. McGregor might decide he wants to chill after making over $100 million. There are so many factors that could delay another MMA fight by months.

And speaking of $100 million, it’s hard to see McGregor go from making that kind of payday to the $3 million per fight he was making in the octagon. The UFC can’t offer him anywhere close to that level of money. Publicly, it’d be a pseudo-demotion for McGregor to make anything less than $30 million for any appearance.

Because he is an insanely competitive person, there’s a good chance he does fight Khabib in Russia, or takes a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz. McGregor loves his money, but he also loves taking challenges. Just know that he’s probably not going to take anymore this year.
