Better late than never. Fans have been waiting for over year for WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko to meet Nicholas Walters, and it’s finally going down this Saturday in Vegas. Lomachenko, the No. 7 pound-for-pound fighter in the world has just seven pro bouts but already holds titles in two divisions. Now, he’ll face a legitimate threat in Walters, who won the WBA featherweight title in October 2014.

Odds Analysis

Lomachenko is a massive 8-1 favorite, as oddsmakers are expecting him to easily best Walters. At +500, Walters offers a huge payday, but comes with a big risk - Lomachenko is a already a beast despite his lack of pro experience.

Fight Preview

Despite having been out for early a year, Walters is still ranked No. 1 WBA, No. 7 WVC and No. 12 WBO. Walters hasn’t fought since last December, when he clawed his way to a 10-round draw against a gritty Jorge Sosa. It was a disappointing outcome against a fighter many felt he should have beat.

Walters lost his title in 2015 when he failed to make the featherweight limit of 127 by just one pound. By the time he rehydrated, his reported walkaround weight was an astonishing 145 pounds. So it comes as no surprise that he chose to move up a weight class. A big question is whether his power will translate against bigger fighters.

Lomachenko captured the WBO title last June at Madison Square Garden with a fifth round knockout of Roman Martinez. It was arguably his best performance to date, though we can’t overlook the fact that Martinez had just come off back-to-back dogfights with Orlando Salido.

Still, we can’t take anything away from Lomachenko’s overall skill. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and perhaps the most decorated amateur boxer in the sport’s history, the Ukrainian is one of HBO’s future stars. Though he’s not on the level of Golovkin yet, Lomachenko is guy that’s on the rise.

Betting Breakdown

If Walters can follow what worked for Salido - body shots - he has a good chance at stealing this fight. Unfortunately for him, Lomachenko uses much more of the ring these days than he did at the start of his career. I don’t think Walters has the skill to chase and hurt Lomachenko enough to win this fight. It’s an easy call for the champ.
