After more years of hype, WBA 160-pound “regular” champion Daniel Jacobs - 30-1, 27 KOs - is set to defend his title against former titleholder Peter Quillin - 31-0-1, 22 KOs this Saturday in New York. Beyond the belt, the matchup will also settle a territorial dispute - both men are based in Brooklyn and will battle for the distinction of the burrough’s best boxer.

ODDS ANALYSIS

It’s not surprising that Quillin is a slight favorite - his resume speaks for itself. However, Jacobs has won 10 in a row and has a few impressive victories himself. If it hasn’t already, I’d expect the money lines to shift closer to pick’em odds this week as more action comes in.

KING OF BROOKLYN

“There is no doubt this is going to be one of the biggest fights Brooklyn has ever seen,” Jacobs stated in a release. “Peter and I go back a long time, but this is business. I’m the champion and he’s the challenger. I’m going to do everything I can to win on December 5 and show the world that I’m the best Brooklyn has to offer.”

Jacobs is one of the more inspirational figures in the sport. In 2011, he had to step away from boxing for 18 months to endure the biggest fight of his life - a battle with cancer that nearly killed him. He returned the ring in late 2012 and just over a year ago, he knocked out Jarrod Fletcher in the fifth round to win a vacant secondary title.

Since then, Jacobs has defended the belt twice. This past April, he knocked out Caleb Truax in April, then posted an eye-opening second round KO of former junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora on August 1.

Quillin won a world title in 2012, scoring six knockdowns and taking a unanimous decision over Hassan N’Dam. He went on to defend the title three times, but vacated the belt last summer instead of facing mandatory challenger Matt Korobov. The purse for the fight was a reported $1.4 million - which would have been the biggest of Quillin’s career.

After a year off for personal reasons, Quillin returned to battle Andy Lee to a contentious draw. Then he knocked out Michael Zerafa this past September. The Chicago native has a few impressive wins on his resume, including names like Winky Wright, Gabriel Rosado, Hassan N’Dam and Antwun Echols.

“The fans have waited a long time for this fight and now it’s finally here,” stated Quillin. “I was back in the gym on Monday after my fight against Zerafa preparing for December 5. I know there is so much at stake for me - a belt and Brooklyn bragging rights. It’s going to be a night to remember for me and all of Brooklyn.”

The winner of the fight could likely face Gennady Golovkin, who is the most feared boxer in all of the sport right now. Golovkin also the top titleholder. Jacobs currently holds the secondary belt.
