Once again, fans are being teased by a boxing vs. MMA superfight with Floyd Mayweather. First, it was against Ronda Rousey at the height of her powers. These days, it’s Conor McGregor. The rumors started flying that the two were set to meet about a week ago, but it was quickly shot down by UFC president Dana White.

THE BOXING MATCH

When news of the potential bout broke, one sportsbook quickly opened with Mayweather as a 20-to-1 favorite. In a pure boxing match, I completely agree with these money lines. While McGregor is the bigger man with explosive knockout power, let’s not kid ourselves.
Mayweather is one of the best boxers in the sport’s history. ESPN boxing analyst Dan Rafael commented on the matchup that Floyd would “toy with him, humiliate him, make him look worse than a novice amateur and knock him out even though [Mayweather]’s not a puncher...It would be a no-hitter. Not the baseball kind but the kind in which Mayweather might go the entire fight without getting hit with anything of significance before he scored the KO.
You’ll find no argument from me, and if you think McGregor would have any sort of chance than you’re straight trippin’ son.

THE UFC MATCH

I believe Mayweather would have a better chance against McGregor in an MMA bout than McGregor would in a boxing match -- but not by much. McGregor’s has never been much of an offensive wrestler and his jiu-jitsu is questionable, which are the two best skills to take out a boxer. The Irishman prefers to strike, which is where Mayweather is most comfortable.
But there’s a huge element of the standup game that boxers are completely unprepared for -- kicks. And “Notorious” loves to throw them. While he hasn’t ever employed a real leg kick strategy in any of his fights, it’s impossible to deny that he’s extremely talented at throwing unconventional kicks that would undoubtedly catch Floyd on more than a few occasions.
