THE LEAD-IN

Everything about Jamel Herring says “‘MERICA.” A 2012 U.S. Olympian, “Semper Fi” also served in the United States Marines and did two tours of duty in Iraq. Should he ever nab a world title, he’s a ready made star for the state.

But he’s faced soft competition thus far in his pro career, as many boxers do early on. He’s gotten better recently, earning wins over veterans like Hector Velasquez and Yakubu Amidu, but Shafikov is probably his toughest test to date.

Shafikov is coming off a loss to Rances Barthelemy in what was his second shot at the IBF lightweight title. His only other loss came against Miguel Vazquez in February 2014. Still, he’s considered a contender in the division, and presents a fine litmus test for Herring.

One of the biggest fight storylines is the height difference between the two. At 5’10”, Herring is five inches taller than Shafikov. However, this is something that Shafikov is used to, and he’s crafted a style that’s built on battering opponents on the inside. Herring will need to keep his opponent at the end of his punches to get by him.

Polish junior middleweight prospect Patryk Szymanski - 15-0, 9 KOs - will face Wilky Campfort in the co-feature. Campfort is coming off a loss in a title bout against Jernell Charlo -- a bout where he was knocked out in the fourth round. The loss ended a 20 fight win streak for Campfort.

At just 23 years old, Szymanski is becoming a familiar face in the States, with nine fights in the U.S., four in Poland and one each in Germany and Puerto Rico. The native of Poland is coming off a win over Richard Gutierrez in his last outing.
