THE FIGHT EVERYBODY WANTS TO SEE

Gennady Golovkin -200

Saul Alvarez +175

A unification bout between WBA “super, IBF and IBO champion Gennady Golovkin and WBC, The Ring and lineal 160-pound titleholder Saul Canelo Alvarez is without a doubt the biggest matchup we could see in 2016. Alvarez is already one of the sport’s biggest stars, but “GGG” is perhaps the most feared puncher in the world today.

Because this is boxing, even though this fight makes sense, it might make more dollars by letting the hype build. The longer fans wait, the bigger the fight seems. As messed up as it sounds, that’s how the promotion game seems to be working today. But Golovkin turns 34 in April, and he needs to keep fighting while he’s still in his prime.

THE RUSSIAN REGIME

January 30, 2016

Sergey Kovalev -2000

Jean Pascal +900

Russia’s Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev is the WBA “super”, IBF and WBO titlist, and he’s got a number of intriguing fights in the light heavyweight division. First up is a January 30 rematch with former champion Jean Pascal. Their first go-round was an entertaining affair that resulted in an eighth round TKO for the Russina.

Should he beat Pascal as expected, there are no shortage of compelling scraps for Kovalev. The most obvious is a unification bout with WBC champion Adonis Stevenson. Undefeated American Andre Ward could also bring stateside fans into the mix. There is also Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Shabransky and Andrezj Fonfara to deal with.

POUND-FOR-POUND THROWDOWN

Roman Gonzalez -500

Juan Francisco Estrada +350

In full honesty, I really have no idea how the money lines would look for this fight. All I know that Gonzalez is widely considered the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, and we need to see more of him. Although it’s been difficult to generate interest in the flyweight division, carrying the P4P title is an impressive feat.

There doesn’t seem anybody that seems to be a credible threat to wresting the strap from Gonzalez, but Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada would be an entertaining rematch for “Chocolatito.” The pair went 12 competitive rounds before Gonzalez took the unanimous decision.

HEAVYWEIGHT FLUX

Tyson Fury +110

Deontay Wilder +110

The heavyweight division is wide open now that Wladimir Klitschko’s reign has come to an end at the hands of Tyson Fury. With Fury as champion, it seems that the titles he possesses are much more attainable than when Klitschko possessed them. The former champion is asking for a rematch, but if that doesn’t happen for whatever reason, WBC champion Deontay Wilder makes sense.

With 34 KOs in 35 victories, Wilder has the type of power that fans love to see in their heavyweights. In fact, Wilder and Fury were once scheduled to fight, and money lines favored Wilder before the match fell apart. As far as other contenders go, there is Alexander Povetkin, Anthony Joshua, and the U.S.’ Charles Martin.
