Odds Analysis

Currently, Alvarez is more than a 6-1 favorite over Chavez, who comes in as a huge underdog at +465. If anything, expect Canelo’s line to get more expensive, as there likely a lot of gamblers who don’t feel that Chavez has a realistic chance.

Fight Breakdown

Many pundits of the fight see this as a cash grab, and it will definitely make a lot of money considering the fight takes place over Cinco de Mayo weekend - a huge event for the Mexican-American population. But just because Chavez has the name doesn’t mean he has the game.

While Chavez will be the bigger man - Alvarez is jumping up over 10 pounds for this 164.5-pound catchweight bout - he hasn’t shown anything in his past fights to suggest he can outbox Canelo. There’s also the fact that he hasn’t been very active since losing to Sergio Martinez in 2012.

In five years, “The Son of a Legend” has only fought five times, and one of those scraps was a loss to Andrzej Fonfara for the vacant WBC international title. In fact, you can’t really go through his resume and really point out an era when he was really good.

Canelo’s a guy who has been in the ring with the best of them. With his only loss coming against Mayweather, the former welterweight champion counts guys like Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan and Shane Mosley among his victims. At just 26, he’s still one of the best young fighters in the world.

How You Should Bet

There is upset potential in Chavez, but it’s minimal at best. The most interesting thing to watch here is how well Canelo handles the added weight, because if he’s successful a dream fight against Gennady Golovkin might be the result.
