Right now, in the sport of boxing, there is no name that strikes greater fear in fighters than Gennady Golovkin. The 34-year old native of Kazakhstan is in the midst of a frightening tear, having stopped 24 straight opponents. In fact, the last time he went to the final bell was in 2008.

This Saturday, WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs gets the unenviable task of trying hand “GGG” his first career loss. It’s doubtful that he’ll even make it to a decision. Let’s check out the boxing odds at BookMaker.eu.

Daniel Jacobs +550
Gennady Golovkin -750
Over/under 7.5 rounds, over +115, under -135

Odds Analysis

Golovkin is more than a 7-1 favorite at -750, with Jacobs a massive underdog at +550. Oddsmakers clearly feel like this will be another stoppage for the unified champion, setting the over/under at 7.5 rounds and assigning the over a plus payout. In other words, this is projected to be just another day at the office for Golovkin.

Fight Breakdown

This might not be as easy a fight as everyone expects. Jacobs is coming off a huge upset where he unexpectedly throttled Peter Quillin. In that tilt, Jacobs’ proved that he had the physical talent and skills to match his fearlessness. It’s clear that he has great lateral movement, quick hands and is obviously a big puncher with a solid KO ratio of 88%.

Still, this is “GGG” we’re talking about. Like Jacobs, he’s coming off the the biggest win of his career, beating the respected Kell Brook by knockout (what else?). Even though he’s nearly 35 five, Golovkin is undoubtedly the best middleweight in the world - with the hardest shots we’ve seen in recent memory.

Defense is still a problem for Golovkin, as he’s there to be hit. But the champ has proven that his chin can hold up under fire - although it’s not something he’ll want to test too often as he ages into his mid-30s. Irregardless, he’s so good offensively that opponents don’t really get to pop off on him very often.

How You Should Bet

While Jacobs might have his moments, expecting him to carry the momentum of his win over Quillin to a killer like Golovkin is a bit much. And GGG’s line is just too expensive to warrant a straight bet. You’ll want to stick with the over/under here. And the over at plus odds is intriguing, considering how well Jacobs moves around the ring. While I do think he’ll go down for the count, he should be able to make it past the 7.5 round mark.
