Anthony Dirrell Set to Battle Marco Antonio Rubio For CBS Card September 6

Anthony-Dirrell-vs-Marco-Antonio-Rubio-Aug31

Former super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell – 27-1-1, 22 KOs – is not only coming off of the first loss of his career, he lost his title in the process. Now, he’s looking to bounce back against veteran Mexican brawler Marco Antonio Rubio – 59-7-1, 51 KOs – and start the long climb back to the top.

CURRENT ODDS

Check our online boxing odds for the latest money lines on each fighter, and expect Dirrell to be the big favorite going into the bout. Rubio may be a fun fighter, but he’s far past his prime as a boxer. The total for this 10-round bout is likely to be set at 9.5 rounds at nearly pick’em odds. Prop bets, like what round the fight will end, are typically released on fight night, so remember to check back in for the latest updates.

GETTING BACK ON TRACK

Dirrell won a world title this past August with a unanimous decision win over Sakio Bika, but failed in his first defense against Badou Jack on April 24.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring and prove that I’m still one of the most dangerous men in the game,” said Dirrell. “Rubio is a tough guy, but I’m coming to knock him out and eventually get my title back. ‘The Dog’ is coming to Texas looking to inflict some pain.”

At one point, Rubio could have been considered “one of the most dangerous men in the game”, but that era has passed. In his last fight, he failed to make weight against Gennady Golovkin and was destroyed in just two rounds. Props to Rubio for taking the fight against GGG, who is absolutely murdering opponents, but his showing was a cold dose of reality for an aging fighter.

“I’m very excited to face Anthony Dirrell on September 6,” said Rubio. “This is a tremendous opportunity for me and I’m going to leave it all in the ring. I promise a great fight for all the fans that come out in Texas.”

There’s no doubt that Rubio will leave it all in the ring, as that’s his trademark. But how much does he have left? Against up-and-comers, he looks fine. But against elite fighters, he looks outclassed at this point.

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Rubio is moving up in weight to take this fight, meaning he’ll be fighting a younger, bigger man come fight night. This is something he’s used to at this point in his career, but he’s simply not equipped to beat top fighters like Dirrell anymore.

I do think that the Mexican brawler is durable enough to make it to the final round, but I wouldn’t argue against going with the under if it nets a positive payout. The easy pick here is the former champion to get a relatively easy win and back on the path to another title.
