Adrien Broner Aims for Fourth World Title Against Khabib Allakhverdiev Oct 3

AdrienBroner-vs-KhabibAllakhverdiev-Sept21

Adrien Broner - 30-2, 22 KOs - is coming off a loss to Shawn Porter this past June. Khabib Allakhverdiev - 19-1, 9 KOs - hasn’t fought in nearly a year and a half. Yet here they are, fighting for a vacant world title. Gotta love boxing right? For what it’s worth, Broner is still considered one of the better boxers in the division today. So there’s that.

BRONER COULD DO BETTER

At 26, Broner has won belts at junior lightweight, lightweight and welterweight. Now he’s seeking a world title in his fourth weight class. It’s a bit perplexing that he’s getting another title shot, considering how out of shape and listless he looked against Shawn Porter. Perhaps fighting in his hometown will energize him this time around.

“I’m excited to be back in Cincinnati taking a tough world-class fighter who is going to bring it,” Broner said. “This fight means the world to me. It’s a huge deal to have the chance to be a four-division world champion at 26 years old.”

Allakhverdiev, 32, has only fought twice since 2012. The native Russian captured a vacant belt via eighth-round technical division in 2012 against Joan Guzman. He made just one successful defense, knocking out former titlist Souleymayne M’baye in the 11th round of their July 2013 encounter. He then lost the belt by unanimous decision to Jessie Vargas in April 2014.

“Broner is a good boxer, he is a fast and talented guy, but as a man I don’t have anything good to say about him,” Allakhverdiev stated. “I am looking forward to a world championship-winning performance and I know that if he tries to do something to get in my head, to approach me or to push me -- that I will be as restrained as possible and save my anger for fight night.”

FIGHT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Most fans will be disappointed that Broner is electing to face the unheralded Allakhverdiev. It would have been awesome to see him tested against the likes of talented guys like Lamont Peterson, Lucas Matthysse, Viktor Postol or Ruslan Provdnikov. You could say that Broner is extremely lucky to be getting a world title opportunity against a guy that’s clearly not on his level.

The fact that Allakhverdiev has fought so sparsely over the last two years is also troubling. By the time he steps into the ring, it will have been 18 months since his last bout. But even if he had been active, his resume pales in comparison to Broner’s.While Broner was picked apart by Porter’s offense, Allakhverdiev doesn’t have the same skill and power.

Broner is an easy pick to win, although he’ll be expensive. The best value might come on the total or the prop bets, so make sure to keep checking back in as they should be up soon, if they’re not already.
