Tiger vs. Phil II Betting

Two of the most popular golfers of all-time, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, have played against each other countless times, including a head-to-head matchup in 2018. They participated in a pay-per-view event late in 2018 that was entitled “The Match: Tiger vs. Phil.” The two players are looking at staging another head-to-head event in May of 2020 and this time they could each have a partner with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning mentioned as potential partners.

Tiger vs. Phil II at a Glance

Date: Sunday, May 24, 2020

Time: 2:00 PM ET

Course: Medalist Golf Club, Hobe Sound, FL.

Defending Champion: Phil Mickelson

With the world basically shutdown due to the coronavirus, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are looking at playing a head-to-head match in May of 2020 to help with relief efforts. The two are reportedly going to be joined by NFL superstars, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Woods would be teamed up with Manning and Mickelson would play with Brady. The event would take place in May at a location still to be determined and unlikely to be on pay-per-view. Early indications are that the event would be televised by Turner Sports, possibly on TNT.

Early reports say that a number of sports stars would be part of the broadcast including NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley who is a studio analyst for TNT. Barkley was part of the broadcast team for the 2018 event when Mickelson defeated Woods in a playoff. The 2020 event would take place without fans and with a small production crew as to stay within the guidelines of social distancing.

The first time these two met it was Tiger listed as about a 2-1 favorite and the public was burned, as Phil won the match in extra holes as a substantial underdog. Tiger is likely to be favored again, but it will be interesting to see how the public bets this second match considering Phil won the first one.

Tiger vs. Phil History

The first event that matched up Woods and Mickelson took place late in 2018 with $9 million up for grabs in a winner-take-all match.  The match was played at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas and it was not decided until the fourth extra hole, played nearly in darkness. The first match between the two was highly anticipated, but it really didn’t deliver. The match was supposed to be on pay-per-view which meant that most people were not going to watch it and the quality of play was poor. Tiger and Phil didn’t seem to be at their best and the broadcast was not done at a high level. The broadcast had trouble right from the start and Turner Sports via Bleacher Report Live had to actually stream the event for free and providers had to issue refunds for the pay-per-view.

The event had a prize purse of $9 million with both golfers pledging to donate portions of their winning to charity if they won. The format had the golfers playing 18 holes of match play. The golfers halved three playoff holes before Mickelson won the event on the 22nd hole. Despite the overall quality of play being below average, the match was competitive, as neither golfer led by more than one shot throughout the match. The two players also made a number of side bets with Mickelson winning three of the five side bets with one push.

The broadcast in the United States and Canada was live streamed on B/R Live with Ernie Johnson Jr. doing the play-by-play while Peter Jacobsen and Darren Clarke did commentary. The broadcast also had Charles Barkley and Samuel L. Jackson doing bits. The B/R Live payment system was a disaster and many customers couldn’t access the pay-per-view so B/R Live was forced to drop the pay-per-view and they live streamed for free.

The Match II: Betting Odds

The first time these two met it was Tiger opening as a -140 favorite. The public was all over Woods and this number was bet up to more than -200. There was a little late buyback on Mickelson, but the sportsbooks did quite well, as the public was heavily backing Woods in this event.
