P2017-GOLF-FedEx-Cup-Betting-OddsGA Betting Online: There has been a growing fascination in American sports with having absolute champions. We want playoffs. We want winners and losers. And most importantly, we want champions we can celebrate as undisputed. Golf was always a bit of an exception to the rule, as the golfer who has finished No. 1 in the world or at the top of the money list was merely a minor recognition. The FedEx Cup isn't the end all, be all of the golf world, but it's a fantastic end-of-year series that is a culmination of the body of work of the previous nine months of golf. It gives the PGA Tour a way to formally declare a champion every single year.

The FedEx Cup is a season-long event, ending with the Tour Championship, which will be held from Thursday, September 21, 2017 through Sunday, September 24, 2017.

FedEx Cup Format

The PGA Tour "regular season" now officially runs from October through August instead of on a traditional calendar cycle. Many of the top players in the world choose to not play at all after the Tour Championship in September, and though that puts them behind the 8-ball in terms of the start of the season, it isn't by any means a disqualifier.

Most tournaments award 500 FedEx Cup points to the winner, while other finishers get fewer points based on their final placements in each tournament. You only have to finish in the top 125 in order to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

That said, the more points you have in the regular season, the better shape you're in for the final four events of the year.

Only golfers in the top 125 get a chance to play in the Northern Trust, the first event in the FedEx Cup playoffs. All point values are multiplied by four for the events in the postseason, including 2,000 to the winner. The field is cut to the top 100 for the Dell Technologies Championship, then to the top 70 for the BMW Championship.

After the BMW Championship, points are reset for all of the golfers. The top-ranked player will be reset to 2,000 points going into the Tour Championship, the second golfer will be at 1,800, and all the way down to 168 points for the last player in the field. Though it technically makes it so any of the 30 players in the Tour Championship can win the FedEx Cup, rare is the golfer who comes from the back of the pack to challenge. Even getting 2,000 points for winning won't be enough to run down the leaders if any of them finish in the top 5 or top 10.

List of FedEx Cup Winners

Year Winner
2016 Rory McIlroy
2015 Jordan Spieth
2014 Billy Horschel
2013 Henrik Stenson
2012 Brandt Snedeker
2011 Bill Haas
2010 Jim Furyk
2009 Tiger Woods
2008 Vijay Singh
2007 Tiger Woods

The list of FedEx Cup winners is all over the place. Though mostly Americans have captured the title, Vijay Singh, Henrik Stenson and Rory McIlroy have also won the FedEx Cup at one time or another. The feats of McIlroy and Stenson are particularly notable since these men have also combined to win five Race to Dubai distinctions, the equivalent on the Euro PGA Tour. Stenson is the only man to ever hold the Race to Dubai and the FedEx Cup at the same time, having done so in 2013. McIlroy completed the career double by winning the FedEx Cup in 2016. The Northern Ireland native has won the Race to Dubai three times.

It's obviously not a long list of golfers who have won the FedEx Cup multiple times. It's hard for golfers just to get into the top 30 and play in the Tour Championship year after year, let alone to actual perform well enough in the event to capture the FedEx Cup itself. It's not surprising that Tiger Woods has won the FedEx Cup twice; he was dominant at the end of the 2000s. But to think that there have been nine different winners of this tournament in the last nine years is remarkable and could continue with as unpredictable as the PGA Tour's major events have been.
