Eastern Michigan Eagles College Football Betting OddsNCAA Football Betting Online: Last season the Eastern Michigan Eagles beat a Wyoming club that nearly won the Mountain West. They also beat Ohio and Central Michigan, two MAC teams that went bowling. After losing 41 of 48 games between 2012 and 2015, beating any team was a plus. And for the first time in 30 years they looked like a FBS team. Chris Creighton got the Eagles to their first bowl game in three decades and the arrow is pointing up on the 2017 squad.

Eagles Regular Season Win Total: 4.5

The hardest part of success is sustaining it. Now Creighton and his Eagles have to do just that after reaching a bowl game for the first time since 1987. EMU went 7-6 last year, matching the win total from the previous four years combined, and there is talent returning. As many as 16 starters are back, including one of the best quarterbacks in the MAC, giving plenty of reasons to think the Eagles can sustain the momentum.

This is Brogan Roback’s team for another season as long as he behaves himself. Returning from a suspension that cost him three games at the beginning of last season, Roback was masterful and the offense took off. He didn’t take over full time until the sixth game of the season and he still threw for 2,694 yards and 18 touchdowns. He proved to be elusive, too, running for 223 yards and a pair of scores.

The Eagles have the best group of skill players the program has seen in some time, and that’s good news for Creighton. However, the line has had issues in the past, and while the group performed admirably last season, the loss of three full-time starters is troublesome. If the front comes around and takes care of business, the ground game should be strong. Ian Eriksen ran for 771 yards and the return of Shaq Vann from injury will bolster the nation’s 85th ranked attack.

After years of struggles on defense, EMU wasn’t that bad last season and key personnel return. The biggest weakness was against the pass, allowing over 265 yards per game. The Eagles return their entire secondary, which should be a good thing. The schedule is formidable with big games against Rutgers, Kentucky and Army on the road, but the Eagles will have a lot of confidence entering 2017 and another bowl is the goal.

Joining the MAC in 1976 after playing one year as a major college independent, Eastern Michigan has enjoyed limited success. One of their best seasons came in 1977 when the Eagles, then known as the Eastern Michigan Hurons, went 8-3. All three losses came within the conference and EMU finished fourth. It would be their highest finish in the conference standings until 1987, when the Hurons went 7-1 in league and 10-2 overall, capturing their first and only MAC Championship. EMU represented the conference in the California Bowl and pulled off a shocking victory over favored San Jose State.

That was the highlight of EMU’s brief history. The school changed its nickname in 1990, but that had little effect on the field. The Eagles haven’t won more than seven games since 1987 and have just four winning seasons. EMU experienced a resurgence last year winning seven games, its most since 1989, and played just its second bowl game, falling 24-20 to Old Dominion.

EMU has just seven winning seasons since 1975 and is among the worst FBS schools in winning percentage since then. Between 1980 and 1982, the Hurons lost 27 consecutive games in what is the darkest period for the program. The team did post four straight winning seasons between 1986 and 1989 and would have gone to a few more bowl games had they been as abundant at that time as they are now.
