2017-NCAAF-Coastal-Carolina-Chanticleers-Bet-OnlineNCAA Football Betting Online: Welcome to the Sun Belt, Coastal Carolina! The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are starting their first season at the FBS level after winning seven Big South titles in the span of 14 seasons at the FCS level. It’s been a meteoric rise for a team that just fielded its first football team in 2003. The Chanticleers will be ineligible to qualify for a bowl this season, but can at least make their presence known throughout the league.

What will Coastal Carolina be like on offense? We’re not even sure if they know. The Chanticleers look set to start a graduate transfer from Syracuse at quarterback in Austin Wilson, but hired an offensive coordinator with an option background.

This team ran on 74 percent of its offensive plays last season. While injuries definitely played a part in this (Coastal Carolina ended up playing a collegiate baseball player who last put on pads in high school at QB at the end of the year), the Chanticleers also had a lot more success on the ground than they did through the air.

Last year’s two leading rushers are no longer in Conway and it looks like former Boston College recruit Marcus Outlow will get the bulk of the carries. Outlow wasn’t bad during his time in Boston College, but opted to transfer in order to see more playing time. He is a powerful runner and will need to be with an offensive line that is going to have a hard time this season.

The defense is in better shape than the offense. Coastal Carolina returns six starters to a unit that allowed under 20 points per game for the third straight season. Shane Johnson and Marcus Williamson are the leaders, each had 5.5 tackles for loss in 2016 and are the leading returning tacklers. The secondary has some questions to answer though with almost all of their talent from last season gone.

Joe Moglia has proven to be a good coach but this is a tall task. The Chanticleers have possibly their least talented team of the decade and have to play quality competition every week. Fortunately, the athletic director didn’t schedule a lot of guarantee games in lieu of getting an inexperienced team some wins in its first year at this level.

2017

The Chanticleers have ramped up their level of play ever since announcing their intention of joining the FBS. Coastal Carolina has gone 43-10 over its last four seasons and won the Big South four out of five times between 2010 and 2014.

Coastal Carolina was only a few points away from an undefeated season in 2016. The team dropped a 27-26 heartbreaker on the road to Jacksonville State and lost a wild double-overtime thriller to Charleston Southern 59-58. The Chanticleers hammered the rest of the teams on their schedule, but making the jump up to FBS is a big leap.

Seven FBS opponents have hosted the Chanticleers and all seven times Coastal Carolina was dispatched of with relative ease. Even the seasons where they were really good, the Chanticleers were blown out by the big boys. The closest they ever came to a win was a 38-28 loss to Toledo back in 2012.

A winless season wouldn’t be too big of a surprise, especially if the Chanticleers can’t get a win in their first three games. Although the schedule is very manageable, the level of competition only gets tougher once Coastal Carolina starts Sun Belt play. They are decent enough to win a couple games though, so 2-10 seems like a good prediction.
