Zhang’s title win was awesome, but now comes the hard part. The 30-year old must defend it against the most loaded women’s division in the UFC. It starts against the most dominant fighter the weight class has seen to date, Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Though the Polish fighter is just 2-3 in her past five, all her losses have come in title fights against either Rose Namajunas or Valentina Shevchenko. Reminder: Joanna has beaten every other fighter she’s faced, from Andrade to Kowalkieiwcz to Claudia Gadelha.
Since losing her MMA debut in 2013, Zhang has been flawless. She outclassed the regional competition in Asia, and vaulted up the strawweight ladder with wins over Jessica Guilar and Tecia Torres. The scary part is that we still don’t know what her ceiling is - but there’s also the chance that she’s a flash in the pan as well.
The championship fight headlines UFC 248 on March 7 in Las Vegas, and it’s surrounded by a strong supporting cast. In the co-main event, former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will look to get back on track against the surging Jared Cannonier. The featherweight matchup between Calvin Kattar and Jeremy Stephens is a guaranteed banger. Action fighter Alex Oliveira meets a brawler in Max Griffin, and bantamweight uber-prospect Sean O’Mally returns from suspension.

We’re about to learn a lot about Weili Zhang. Jedrzejczyk has only been beaten by elite strikers, and she’s schooled pretty much everyone else. Online oddsmakers opened with extremely competitive odds, and we can see why. It’s plausible that the Polish kickboxer cruises to the type of easy victory that marked most of her title reign - or Zhang proves to be even more of a beast than she’s already shown and plows through her.
Whittaker fights for the first time since losing the 185-pound championship, and it’ll be compelling to see how he bounces back. Not only did he lose to Israel Adesanya, he was absolutely schooled. Was that ring rust after a long layoff? Was he irreparably damaged by two wars with Romero? Or does he come back and crush Cannonier - who has quietly become one of the most explosive fighters in the division.
We’re extremely excited to see Sean O’Malley back in action. He was proving to be a live wire at 135 pounds, before a PEDs suspension halted all his momentum. Not only is he fun to watch, he has the charisma to be a legit star. At 10-0, let’s see if he can pick up where he left off.
