UFC 233: Cejudo vs. Dillashaw Betting

MMA Betting

UFC 233 takes place on Saturday, January 26, 2018 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The main card airs live on pay-per-view starting 10pm ET.

The flyweight division is pretty much dead in the water. Especially since it’s current champion, Henry Cejudo, will be moving up to challenge bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw. It’s a great fight, but also signals that a bunch of talented 125-pounders are going to be unemployed very soon.

For what it’s worth, Cejudo should settle in nicely in the 135-pound ranks even if he loses as expected. The silver lining here is that Dillashaw can get back to fighting in his natural weight class and stop flirting with the idea of being a double champ and holding up the rest of the division. Plus, their main event matchup pits an Olympic gold medalist wrestler in Cejudo against the fancy footwork of Dillashaw. Watching The Messenger try to take down the perpetually dancing TJ is gonna be a lot of fun.

Also on the card is the debut of Ben Askren, the undefeated former Bellator and One FC champion. Long thought of as the best fighter to never have fought in the UFC, Askren was “traded” by One FC for former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, so it’s kind of ironic that he be making his debut here. “Funky” gets thrown right into the shark tank against Robbie Lawler, a tough-as-nails mofo with very violent tendencies.

UFC 233 Betting Lines, Predictions and Picks

The main event might be a champion vs. champion contest, but we’d hesitate to call it a superfight given that neither brings too much starpower. Oddsmakers opened with Dillashaw as a -195 favorite, with Cejudo at +185 on the comeback. The size difference definitely plays a factor into this, as it’s much tougher for a wrestler to take down a bigger dude that also happens to be a solid wrestler himself.

Speaking of wrestling, nobody’s been able to touch Askren, who pretty much takes his opponent down and shrinkwraps his body onto the poor souls. “Funky’s” folkstyle wrestling isn’t a style seen very often in MMA, and in 18 pro fights nobody’s been able to solve it. However, it’s not the most fan-friendly, and Askren’s watchability has been a big part of why the UFC took so long to sign him. Pairing him with Robbie Lawler - whose allergic to boring fights - is a great move. We’ll finally get to see Askren in the cage throwing down with some of the best in the world.

You’ve heard of the name Gracie? Well it was Rickson Gracie that was considered the best out of all them, and now his son Kron is making his UFC debut. Even if you’ve never watched Kron fight, the name and the heritage alone should draw your attention. Alex Caceres is a striker by nature, so he’s pretty much toast if this goes to the ground.

Alex Hernandez might just be the lightweight division’s best prospect, as he’s a hulking wrestler who can sleep dudes with his fists. He squares off against Francisco Trinaldo, who is playing gatekeeper for the upper lightweight tier. If Hernandez dominates here, his career busts wide open.
