The Paris Eternal became the second European franchise to join the Overwatch League last offseason. Paris will join the London Spitfire in the Atlantic Division, and the two cities will renew one of the oldest feuds in the world at the Blizzard Arena in 2019. They have tapped into the heart of Paris and France with their choice of a name, a logo, and their colors, and that should help them win support. They are named the Eternal after the eternal flame that has burned under the Arc de Triumph for almost 100 years, used the Gallic rooster that you see on the French national soccer team’s jerseys, and they made their colors red, white, and blue like the French flag.

Paris Eternal Owners

DM Esports are the owners of Paris Eternal. DM stands for Drew McCourt, and he is the principal owner of the organization. He is the son of former Los Angeles Dodgers’ owner Frank McCourt, and the McCourt family has started to develop ties to France with their recent investments. Frank McCourt bought Olympique Marseille back in 2016, and the club nearly won the Europa League last season. This is DM Esports’ lone competitive team to this point, so they don’t have to worry about resources or attention being spread thin across multiple games.

Paris Eternal Roster

This might be DM’s first venture into Esports, but they did a bang-up job of putting together a coaching staff and a team. The Eternal signed Daemon to be their head coach, and he was the head coach of the most surprising team in the Overwatch League last year. He led the Los Angeles Valiant to a surprising finish that no one expected, and he is hoping to do the same with a team from his native country. Daemon brought in Fefe, Seita, and KyKy to be assistants, and all three are well-respected in the community.

Two former members of the Valiant will be joining their old coach on Paris. Soon is the one that everyone knows. He is also French and was constantly in the mix for the Valiant last year. Soon played a lot of Tracer, but he was skilled on Widowmaker, McCree, and Zarya too.

Finnsi doesn’t have the same name recognition as Soon, but he was on the Valiant as well. He joined the team at midseason and played sparingly, but he has familiarity with both Daemon and Soon, and that will come in handy.

One of the most intriguing additions was DPS Shadowburn. Shadowburn was seen as one of the top DPS players in the world in 2017 for his performances with the Russian national team, but he was eventually benched by the Philadelphia Fusion, and there are questions about how he fits into a team dynamic. He is no doubt talented, but he has to fit into a role in order to succeed. Danye will round out the team’s DPS mains.

LhCloudy is going to be the team’s main tank. He was on Finland’s Team Gigantti for most of last season, but he signed with the Mayhem Academy at the conclusion of the year and quickly moved on to join Paris. Joining Finnsi at flex tank will be Nicogdh. Nicogdh can play either flex or DPS, so it will be interesting to see how he is used.

Kruise will be Paris’ primary support. He was a member of Toronto Esports in Contenders last season, and he was known as one of the better support players in the league. Hyp and Greyy are the other two supports for the Eternal. Hyp is known more for his Zenyatta play, while Greyy can play Ana, Zenyatta, and Sombra. Expect these two to alternate depending on map and meta.

Paris Eternal 2019 Preview

This is a well-built team, and I think they have done enough to make the playoffs at the end of the season. There is room for growth if the new players can come into their own, and if Shadowburn can rein his aggressive play, they could be really formidable. Paris is not expected to have the language barrier that other teams will deal with since they signed all Western players, and we will see how that plays out.
