Kovalev last stepped into the ring on August 24, 2019 when he faced Anthony Yarde for the World Boxing Organization world light heavyweight title. Kovalev posted an 11th round technical knockout win.

Prior to that on February 2, 2019 Kovalev faced Eleider Alvarez in a revenge match after he lost by knockout in the first bout between the two. Kovalev extracted revenge in a 12 round unanimous decision win for the World Boxing Organization world light heavyweight title.
